Today, Cimas Health Group proudly renames Van Praagh Medical Centre to Madeline Nyamwanza Makonese Medical Centre, honouring a remarkable woman who broke barriers and helped shape Zimbabwe's medical history.
In 1970, Dr Madeline Nyamwanza-Makonese became the first Black woman to qualify as a medical doctor in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, paving the way for generations of women in medicine.
Her legacy extends beyond this historic achievement. Through her dedication to patient care, advocacy for women's advancement and mentorship of future healthcare professionals, she helped create opportunities for those who followed.
This renaming forms part of our Legacy Project, through which we recognise and preserve the contributions of individuals who helped shape Zimbabwe's healthcare landscape.
More than a name on a building. A legacy that will inspire generations.
