I was challenged to think about what type of landscape/garden designer I want to be recently. I have no doubt in my mind about the types of spaces I want to help create. To tie in with my beliefs I have decided to change my business name to Wild Suburban Gardens. I am passionate about organic wildlife friendly spaces that will do our little bit to green up our country. Could you imagine if we all took responsibility to make our small patch healthy and whole again, what impact that would have on our beautiful
Nation? My gardening style is not just about aesthetics, it’s about what lies beneath. It begins with heath of your soil.

I can’t work out how to change the name of this page so I may have to delete it and start again. Please look out for me and like the new page if that is indeed what I need to do. If anyone knows how to change the page name please let me know. Yours in gardening, Leonie

The humble day lily.

They are hardy, so easy to grow and although each flower only lasts a day there are generally multiple flowers for each plant. This beautiful plant can handle our heat and also to some degree the water shortages!

The Plot nursery has a good selection which are about to come into flower. If you want a more specialised hybrid and have the patience then contact Pete from Peter Piper at the Maasdorp and Amanzi markets. He sells them in fans which when grown on will flower next year.

An awkward alley with a compacted path that gets tiny bit of quite hot sun. We could have this lawned properly but it would take weekly maintenance to keep aerating the soil, feeding and watering. Much easier to lose it altogether. I’ve deliberately chosen a lovely liriope muscari to plant in the cut outs as it is hardy, waterwise and tolerates this kind of sun/shade. Plus I should get little purple flowers as a bonus. It spreads easily so will fill this area quickly. It’s also called lily turf or monkey grass

Don’t banish your fruit and veg to the far corner. Create a beautiful permaculture garden that you can enjoy the flowers and snack from the fruits.

Problem solving. The dogs continue to run through this bed so we’ll just work with it and give them the path they need.
