Substance abuse is slowly becoming part of the daily lives of most neighborhood communities. Most of our youths in Zimbabwe are drug abusers and also part of our unemployed citizens. It’s unfortunate that most substance abusers resort to crime in order to get money to satisfy their desire for drugs. Their targets are laptops, cellphones, jewelry, TVs. House breakings are part of organized neighborhood crime, with most house breakings crimes taking place in the early hours of the morning.

Villager shot dead in Chimanimani land row

A DISPUTE over land turned fatal at Ariston Holdings’ Roscommon Estate in Chimanimani on Monday after a security guard gunned down a villager and injured another, The Herald has learnt.Police and Ariston Holdings confirmed the incident yesterday. Roscommon Estate produces world acclaimed niche red tea Wanganella. It is also into macadamia, coffee and potato production. The company runs four other estates across the country, namely Claremount, Kent, Clearwater and Southdown. The Herald is reliably informed that the company has been at loggerheads with villagers since 2002 after part of its estate was gazetted by Government. This paved way for its allocation to the landless. “They (Ariston Holdings) asked for a grace period saying they wanted to harvest their crop but they continued on the farm to date creating friction with new farmers who had been allocated the land,” a source told The Herald. Relations between the company and the villagers broke down after it allegedly destroyed their crops and banana plantations recently. Villagers’ homes were also destroyed. This was after the company obtained a court order granting it permission to evict the settlers.
“On November 19 the Messenger of Court came to evict the settlers. When they came, the district lands committee was engaging the company to try and find an amicable solution. They started destroying some structures. On Monday morning the company sent its employees to destroy the people’s banana plantations and other crops,” added the source. Some homes were also destroyed.

“Last night those who had their homes destroyed decided to go to the estate to safeguard their belongings. A security guard identified as Nicholas Bere fired at the villagers, killing Mr Beware Tsarai. He injured Mr Shingai Mafake. Mr Mafake was rushed to Mutambara Hospital where he is admitted. Mr Tsarai’s body was taken to a mortuary in Chipinge. Bere was arrested and faces a murder charge,” said the source. Read more on https://www.herald.co.zw/villager-shot-dead-in-chimanimani-land-row/

Bully (16) stabs boy thrice over protection fee

A 16-year-old bully from Bulawayo has been arrested for allegedly stabbing another boy thrice with an Okapi knife demanding money that he said was a protection fee in the neighbourhood. The assailant from Mpopoma suburb allegedly ambushed and stabbed his victim who is also aged 16 on his back while he was on his way to a barbershop. The court heard that the accused had previously demanded money from the complainant who lives at a neighbouring house but he refused to give him. The juvenile pleaded guilty to an assault charge before Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Stephen Ndlovu. He was remanded out of custody on free bail to December 2 for continuation of trial. The boy said he stabbed his neighbour with a screwdriver. “I do admit to the charges levelled against me, but I didn’t use an Okapi knife your worship, I used a screwdriver,” he said. For the State, Mr Stewart Madzore said the accused person allegedly committed the offence on October 20 this year. “The accused person unlawfully stabbed the complainant three times on his back using an Okapi knife after they had a misunderstanding,” he said. Mr Madzore said the victim was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital after he sustained deep cuts on his back. The complainant said the accused person was in the habit of bullying him. “The accused person said I should give him money which he claimed to be a protection fee in the neighbourhood. I told him that I’m only a student and I don’t have money and he got angry. After sometime in October, the accused person, who was in company of his friends ambushed and stabbed me on my back. I screamed for help and I was rushed to hospital as blood was gushing out from the wounds,” he said. The matter was reported to police leading to the bully’s arrest.—

Crime spree lands man in court

Allegedly killing one close relative with two blows of an axe, trying to r**e a shop assistant and assaulting another elderly close relative after accusing him of witchcraft has seen a 47-year-old Chinamhora man remanded in custody for trial on four charges.
Killian Shonhiwa Tagarira allegedly killed his uncle on November 7 and also attempted to r**e a shop assistant the following day. He had already, a few weeks before, assaulted another 80-year-old uncle and hurled rocks at an old woman’s house who had, not unreasonably, refused to admit him at midnight. Tagarira appeared before magistrate Mrs Victoria Mashamba this week facing four charges of murder, attempted r**e, assault and disorderly conduct. He was remanded in custody to November 25 and told, if he wanted bail, to apply at the High Court. Prosecuting, Ms Flossy Jambaja alleged that on November 7 at around 2am, Tagarira, armed with an axe, went to his uncle Bernard Shonhiwa’s house and ordered him to come out, saying he came in peace. Shoniwa was not having that and refused to open the door, so Tagarira broke in, dragged his uncle outside and allegedly smashed his head twice with an axe. Hearing screams, neighbours rushed over, found Shonhiwa lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to hospital. He was declared dead on arrival. The following night, Tagarira slunk into a shop in the same area at around 7pm and demanded s*x from the shop attendant, who was alone. She refused and retreated into a room, but Tagarira followed, pinned her to the ground, choked and gagged her. But the woman’s sister arrived just in time and started fighting Tagarira, who pushed her way. While Tagarira was still trying to assault the shop assistant, the sister sought help from villagers who tried to overpower Tagarira. But he escaped, although the police managed to track him down a few days later. While the police were arresting him for the alleged murder and attempted r**e, two other alleged crimes were reported. 15-yr-old girl endures 8-day r**e hell

A ZVISHAVANE man allegedly kidnapped his neighbour’s teenage daughter and r**ed her in an eight-day hostage ordeal. Victor Beta, 36, of Kofi village under Chief Masunda in Zvishavane appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Shepherd Munjanja facing kidnapping and r**e charges. He pleaded not guilty, saying he had consensual s*x with the 15-year-old girl. “Your worship l didn’t r**e her. She agreed to have s*x with me on the basis that I was going to give her bus fare to Harare. “It’s unfortunate that she says I r**ed her, but every time I had s*x with her it was by consent,” said Beta.

He was remanded in custody to Friday for the continuation of trial. Prosecuting, Talent Tadenyika said Beta found his victim in a nearby bush crying some time in May. Upon inquiry, the victim told him that she had been chased away from home by her father and her stepmother and she needed $15 to go to her biological mother in Harare.

“Beta then took the girl to his home where he r**ed her on seven occasions in eight days,” said Tadenyika. The court heard that the matter came to light after the girl’s parents reported to the police that she was missing.

The police then received a tip off from a villager that Beta was living with an underage girl whom he had turned into his wife.

‘He wanted to kill the whole family’: Soldier shoots wife dead, injures mother-in-law

A soldier identified as Aaron Mlambo shot and killed his wife Evelyn Precious Madawu, leaving her mother hospitalised Sunday night after a domestic row.
Madawu’s mother is currently at Chitungwiza General Hospital where she is reportedly receiving treatment.
Sources said Mlambo and Madawu were living separately after their marriage hit the rocks.
Madawu had retreated to her parents’ home where she was to be murdered.
A teenage girl, identified as a sister to Madawu, who witnessed the incident murder said Mlambo wanted to kill the whole family.
“He knocked and I opened the door for him to come in and he was holding an AK47. I asked if he had come to see his wife and before I could answer, the wife came out of the bedroom where she was sleeping with mum. That is when he saw his wife and told her that he had come to shoot her.
“She tried to close the door but was pushed to the wall. She was shot twice in the head, my mum shouted calling for help from our brother who was sleeping in the next bedroom and he shot her ear off,” said the distraught girl.
“My brother had to hide under the bed and that is how he survived. When I saw Aaron turning back to me, I ran out of the house. He later left.”
Another family member identified as Ivy Mloyi said Mlambo had become abusive.
“Whenever he came from Masvingo he could take Evelyn to the hospital for s*xually transmitted diseases and he used to send me messages telling me that Evelyn got him STIs but we did not see the records that she had any STI.
“This guy used to send the whole family messages saying he is going to shoot us all, but we took it for granted,” Mloyi said.
“Evelyn was now working in town in a beauty parlour. Mlambo was not happy with it.
“She told us Mlambo had indicated he wanted to kill her on several occasions. We laughed it off because we took it as a joke in bad taste. They were also fighting over their baby’s custody.” – NewZimbabwe

5 armed robbers nabbed

POLICE in Kadoma have arrested five suspected armed robbers on allegations of robbing artisanal miners of gold ore. The five, who were armed with machetes, reportedly pounced on unsuspecting miners and forcibly took away nine bags of gold ore. It is alleged the machete-wielding gang found the complainants sleeping before demanding gold ore. Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident. “Five robbers have been arrested in Kadoma,” he said. “On October 20, at about 2am the five accused persons ambushed the complainants while they were sleeping and threatened them with machetes demanding gold ore. “One of the complainants was struck on the back with a machete and sustained some injuries. In the process nine bags of ore were stolen and taken to a road which is about 100 metres away from the mine.” Asst Comm Nyathi said the armed robbers proceeded to a nearby gold mine where they loaded more ore. However, their shenanigans were discovered after the driver they hired informed the complainants on the whereabouts of their ore. “The accused stopped a truck that was passing by and directed the driver to the mine where more ore was loaded,” said Asst Comm Nyathi. “The driver was made to drop the loot in Waverly and he then informed the complainants where their ore had been taken to, leading to the arrest of the robbers. The robbers will appear in court soon.” Meanwhile, police at Inyathi have arrested six other suspected armed robbers. “The six are part of a gang of 11 who attacked complainant with axes, iron bars and k**b- kerries at his homestead at Sijauke Village 5, Siganda and stole US$90, $1 050,00, Alcatel cellphone, a pair of safety shoes, a small radio and nothing was recovered,” said Asst Insp Nyathi. “Accused persons will appear in court soon.” He appealed to members of the public to desist from engaging in criminal activities. “Those who engage in criminal activities will only have themselves to blame because the police and the law will not spare them,” he said. “We urge members of the public to be always on the alert for these criminals and assist the police with information as they carry out investigations.” - Herald

Taxi driver foils robbery bid

A Harare man appeared in court yesterday on allegations of robbing a taxi driver after posing as a customer. Velton Tinashe Makufa (26) appeared before Harare magistrate, Mrs Victoria Mashamba, facing one count of robbery. He was remanded in custody to today for bail application. Prosecutor Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti alleged that on Sunday, November 3, Gift Gera parked his motor vehicle at Holly’s Night Club waiting for customers. Makufa, who was in the company of his two accomplices — Piason and Tafadzwa — who are still at large, approached Gera and hired him to Coronation Road, Greendale, in Harare, and agreed on a US$5 fare. Simbarashe Mushango, Gera’s employer, was sleeping in the boot of the motor vehicle. Gera drove to Coronation area as directed by Makufa. It is the State’s case that upon arrival at a Greendale house, Makufa instructed Gera to stop, purporting to have arrived. As the motor vehicle stopped, one of the gang members who was on the back seat grabbed Gera by the neck and produced a knife and instructed him to comply with their instructions. Makufa jumped onto the driver’s seat and drove the vehicle while Piason and Tafadzwa pulled Gera to the back. Gera resisted and started wrestling with his assailants. The noise awakened Mushango, who was asleep in the boot. The two accomplices, who are still at large, ran away leaving Makufa, who was on the driver’s seat. Gera, with the assistance of Mashango, effected a citizens’ arrest on Makufa and took him to Harare Central Police Station.
