Melbourne you filled our design cup this weekend! Discovering moments in a city on foot, we feel inspired by all we saw Sean Godsell Architects ARM Architecture RMIT Architecture and my absolute favourite Kennedy Nolan. Your contributions to the city fabric make any roaming architect a danger in crossing streets full of trams :)

Receiving the named award, The John Schenk Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions)—an honour we’re incredibly proud of!

Thank you to Architectural Window Systems for sponsoring this award, and to the institute and the jury for choosing our project. Their words still make us smile and reflect on what we achieved together.

“Archaea’s Yeo House is an exceptional expression of collaboration between architect, client and builder. Realised through an ambitious and carefully considered journey from the drawing board through to construction, the result is a colourful and sculptural home that is deeply responsive to the clients and their site.

At the heart of the house, a lush central courtyard draws people through and connects directly to the main living space, while more private rooms open onto their own secluded gardens. The distinctive geometry of the addition, such as the brick barrel-vaulted ceiling and curved glass window, is thoughtfully carried through the existing house.

A rich palette of materials is employed with confidence and care, resulting in an environment that is bold, playful and occasionally challenging. An exceptional level of care is evident in the detailing, with consideration carried thoughtfully from architectural form through to the final interior elements. The result is a highly resolved and characterful addition that rewards close attention and celebrates design ingenuity at every scale.”

Captured first collecting the top honour: the named award for Interior Architecture: The Robert Dickson Award for Interior Architecture

Thanks to our clients, the institute and the jury for their words that summarised our winning project Yeo Yo:

“Yeo House presents a refined synthesis of architecture and interior design, where spatial clarity and material sensitivity converge in a cohesive and intentional manner. The design demonstrates a confident command of geometry, light and colour, shaping a domestic environment that feels both calm and expressive.
Carefully curated textures work in harmony with a bold yet controlled application of colour, enhancing continuity between spaces while maintaining distinct spatial identities. Bespoke details are thoughtfully integrated, elevating everyday living experiences through craftsmanship and precision.

The tonal palette transitions gracefully from bold and distinctive moments to moody, intimate atmospheres, creating a dynamic yet balanced interior language. Natural light interacts with crafted surfaces to produce a timeless quality that feels both contemporary and enduring. Through considered planning and poetic ex*****on, the project exemplifies a holistic design approach, successfully balancing functionality, aesthetics and emotional resonance at a consistently high level of design excellence.”

There are three bathrooms at Yeo Yo – all designed to be immersive, each with its own palette and identity. The guest bathroom is entirely colour-blocked in green, layered with marble and ceramic tiles offset by a copper infinity mirror. The guest ensuite a broody blue and terracotta palette. Possibly the boldest microcement to date, the Ensuite hero’s the Barrgán inspired pinkish orange hue. Which one is your favourite? Green, blue or pink?
