Auckland study tour day 6;
This morning we visited the house and workplace of David Strachan of Crate Architects which was fabulous. We then had a free afternoonwhich involved ☕️, 🛍️, 🛴. After an impromptu wine tasting conducted by Claire of Vanguardist Our farewell dinner was the perfect finish to an extremely enjoyable tour at Metita. Flying home tomorrow.

Auckland study tour day 5;
Today we collaborated with ADNZ and joined their day tour to visit 3 projects outside the Auckland area. It was a big day on the bus but we saw some great Architecture. Finished at a pub to debrief, have dinner and laugh with a comedian. Fitted in a quick walk around Eden Park as the pub was right next door!

Auckland study tour day 4;
Ferry to Waiheke Island first thing this morning then bus to our first house visit at the award winning “Waiheke house” with George Gregory if Cheshire Architects. Onto a magnificent lunch at Wild Estate then travel to Onetangi bay to see another award winning house hosted by Architect Lance Herbst, builder Jarred Biggs and owners Andre and Erika. We then called into Eco Zip for their Zipline experience before catching a Ferry back to the mainland.

Auckland tour day 3;
APL AWS Commercial Architecture Walking Tour with Phillip Negus & Arnal Shyam: visit Home Ground, accomodation and more for the homeless where we met Nicholas the Architect and our host.
Then it was off to the Levy Building with a talk by Adam Mercer of Mercer Architects.
We then experienced an indepth understanding of the Britomart heritage precinct and Britomart Hotel with Dajiang Tai of Cheshire Architects.
Lunch was at Canting, with Adam, DJ and Te Ari, and our APL & AWS hosts.
We’ll then taxi to Guy Tarrant’s courtyard house for a private walkthrough which was such a privilege. Then a small group of us undertook the All Blacks Experience at Sky City which was fantastic!

Auckland study tour day 2: Ludo took us on a city walking tour, showing us how the city has been transformed into one of the most livable cities in the world, a transformation in which he had a major part to play. Lunch at Sofitel Then, James Hardie took us on a tour of Long Bay, a new estate featuring many James Hardie products throughout many home designs. Finished at a Māori Marae for a traditional welcome, performances and hangi dinner.

Wright House
With the restoration of the heritage facade being a focus, it was critical that materials for the new extension were sympathetic to the heritage frontage yet durable and lightweight to minimise environmental impact and ensure longevity of the renovation.

Wright house
The stairs between levels were previously narrow, enclosed and gloomy, the timber finishes, open treads and transparent glass balustrading widen and open the central zone of the home and form a connection between levels. Coupled with the introduction of two large skylights over the stairs, both floors are now flooded with natural light, creating an inviting link between the living space and the first floor above and contributing to the now bright and airy atmosphere of the home’s interior.
