We asked our sparky Mitch what advice he’d give to apprentices, and his answer was simple.

Don’t wait to be told every step. Think ahead and look for ways to help your tradie before they even ask.

Small things like grabbing the next tool or setting up the next part of the job make a big difference on site and help build trust with the team around you.

Part 2 | From the Garage

Not every chapter of a business story is about growth.

There was a time when Smartfix was growing quickly and, from the outside, things looked successful. But behind the scenes, the business was under serious pressure.

By the end of the financial year, Smartfix had recorded a loss of around $2.2 million. It was one of the toughest periods in the company’s history and forced some difficult decisions.

That experience changed everything. The focus shifted from growing bigger to building a stronger, more sustainable business for both customers and the team.

Most people only see the end result. They don’t see the challenges and lessons along the way.

This is From the Garage. Follow along for Part 3.

Part 1 | From the Garage

January 2018. One ute. One set of tools. One electrician working out of a garage in Perth. That’s where Smartfix began.

Back then, every part of the job was done by hand. Stocking the ute, organising the tools, ordering uniforms, and showing up every day to help customers across Perth.

What started as a small local electrical business has grown into a multi-trade team servicing homes across the Perth metropolitan area, with more than 60 apprentices trained along the way. But the values haven’t changed: show up, do quality work, communicate clearly, and look after people.

This is From the Garage. The story of how Smartfix grew from a garage in Perth into the team it is today. Follow along for Part 2.

Big shoutout to our sparky Mitch.

Over the last year and a half, Mitch has become a seriously valued part of the Smartfix team. He’s reliable on site, great with customers, and always takes pride in making sure work is done properly from start to finish.

Whether he’s helping with outdoor lighting installs, residential electrical work, or supporting the team on busy days, Mitch always brings a good attitude and strong attention to detail.

If you’ve seen some of our recent behind-the-scenes reels, chances are you’ve already spotted him on the tools around Perth.

Glad to have you on the team, Mitch.

Ever started a “simple” job at home and realised it was anything but?

We asked plumber Owen one thing he wishes more Perth homeowners knew, and his answer was simple. Older homes can hide bigger problems behind small fixes.

In this week’s Ask a Tradie, Owen explains why jobs like changing a garden tap can quickly uncover hidden plumbing issues, and why plumbing and electrical work should always be left to licensed tradespeople.

Save this for later or send us a message if you need help from our licensed team.

Eddie kicks this one off with a walkthrough of our recent Nollamara project. This is what a bigger multi-trade job actually looks like when a well organised team gets stuck into it.

We had 8 tradies on the ground at a duplex in Nollamara with our sparkys replacing the evap air cons and our plumbers installing whole house water filtration systems in each property. It's a good example of what becomes possible when you've got a team big enough to run multiple trades simultaneously rather than having to sequence everything one after the other.

If you want to see the full evap air con or water filter install process, we have already posted individual videos on our page. It's worth checking out.

At Smartfix, team culture is about more than the work we do on site.

As a WA family-owned business, we believe in looking after our customers, supporting our community, and showing up for causes that matter. That’s why our team was proud to get involved in this year’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for the Cancer Council.

It was a great chance to come together, share a few laughs, and raise $130 in gold coin donations for an important cause.

A big thank you to everyone who supported the fundraiser. We’re proud to be part of the Perth community.

Men's Mental Health Month runs all through June, and it's a fair reason to slow down and talk about something the trades don't talk about enough.

We sat down with Jevyn from Mens Talk on the Hypotential podcast to get into what's really going on for blokes on the tools. The pressure, the long days, the habit of saying you're fine when you're not.

This one matters to us. The people behind our vans at Smartfix are husbands, dads, mates and sons, and looking out for each other shouldn't wait for a bad week.

Mens Talk is an Australian not-for-profit organisation dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding men's mental health. Through conversations, education and community support, they encourage men to prioritise their mental wellbeing and build healthier habits, helping create a future where talking about mental health is normal. Give them a follow at Mens Talk AU and have a listen to the full chat with Jevyn.

Check on your mates this week. The ones who seem fine too.

We put our sparky Eddie on the spot and asked him for one piece of advice he has for an apprentice.

Sometimes the best advice is the simplest kind, and Eddie's response is a pretty good reminder that backing yourself and doing what makes you happy is never really the wrong call. If you know someone who's been thinking about an apprenticeship or a trade career and just hasn't quite pulled the trigger yet, tag them in this one because Eddie might just be the nudge they need.
