A 2026 look at Australian renovation budget blowouts found the top causes weren't expensive finishes. They were scope creep, underestimated trade costs, thin contingencies, and starting without a fully finalised plan.
That last one is where I spend most of my time. A floor plan that looks finished on paper still hides gaps. Joinery confirmed before checking it fits the benchtop already chosen. An appliance cavity sized off an old fridge. A door that was never tested against the new cabinetry swing.
None of it comes down to picking the wrong tile or tap. It comes down to a decision that was assumed to be locked in, never actually pressure-tested against everything else in the room.
A layout change made after joinery's already ordered can cost $5,000 to $10,000 in wasted materials and rework. A proper floor plan review and 3D visualisation catches this before a builder ever prices the job.
