There’s a lot to consider when lighting a bathroom. The light you want first thing in the morning, softer light at night, functional light at the mirror, light for the shower, and even the WC needs its own layers of light.

In this bathroom, each area has been considered separately, but the layers work together as a whole. Some are there for function, some bring softness and balance to the room, and others only come on when that extra light is actually needed.

Bathroom lighting isn’t about making everything bright at once. It’s about having the right layers of light to choose from, depending on what you’re doing.

It’s easy to be misled by how colour appears online, as photography can play tricks on the way we perceive light. But here, side by side, you can clearly see how crisp and functional 3000K warm white looks next to the much warmer 2400K. Then, as soon as we remove the 2400K, the 3000K suddenly appears much warmer.

Across the globe we all have different requirements
and norms for our preferred colour of light, however, in MINT homes we aim for a consistent 3000k “neutral warm white” light that is in essence white but is slightly warm.

Directional light is a wonderfully diverse type of light, and it can be used to create a huge range of effects in the home. When used with consideration for what you want to see, a lighting design with well-placed directional light can be magic.

So, what’s considered directional lighting?

Well, it can be anything from, spotlights, wall lights, floor lamps, table lamps, some pendants, spike lights in the garden, the list goes on.
It’s any light that can create a controlled beam of light, which then can be aimed in a particular direction, through adjustment, or through luminaire design.

Every kitchen layout is unique, which means each client’s lighting needs are different. A key part of the design process is carefully aiming the lights so they support and reflect the overall design intention.

By tilting a pair of spotlights at the sink towards the wall, we reduced glare and highlighted shelving. This simple adjustment also allowed borrowed light to filter into the powder room through a frosted window.

We’re not anti downlights! We’re anti pancake downlights and downlights used without intention.

In this entry, pin spots graze the stone walls, bringing out the texture, while small aperture, low glare, downlights within the timber ceiling push functional light through the stairwell to the lower floor.

It’s not about avoiding downlights. It’s about choosing the right fitting, for the right effect, in the right place.

Here’s the 4 main things we look for at MINT:
Colour Rendering Index CRI, Glare Control, Consistency of Colour Temperature and Efficacy.
If those are all good, you’re a reasonable chance that the fitting is good quality.

There are over 100 other markers that we check as professionals, and of course it also needs to be the right light fitting for the job.

Now, here’s where many homeowners get caught out, as not all indirect/uplight fittings are created equal.
