Some people want deep reds or sunshine yellows. Others want everything soft and neutral. Neither are wrong, and a lot of it comes down to what a colour reminds you of: a room you grew up in, a place you’ve travelled to, the way the light falls in your home.

This is the Gul, also known as the elephant’s foot, one of the most iconic patterns in all of Turkmen weaving.

Every Turkmen tribe has their own version, and this one is Ersari, one of the biggest Turkmen tribes, who have been weaving this pattern for generations.

“This rug, I don’t mind if it doesn’t sell.”

That is how Najaf feels about this one. An antique Ersari Turkmen, over 100 years old. The red comes from tree root. The blue from indigo. No chemical, no synthetic, nothing that was not already in the earth. The wool is hand-spun and every knot was tied by hand.

Najaf has known rugs like this his whole life. And this one, he says, has everything. The colour, the pattern, the age. This is a proper Ersari.

Some rugs Najaf just wants people to see, this is one of those.

The Oushak tradition began in the small Turkish town of Uşak in the 15th century, known for its soft muted palette and large-scale botanical designs that breathe across the field rather than crowd it. That restraint is exactly what has kept the style relevant for over 500 years.

Afghan weavers fell in love with it too, but they made it their own. The large-scale florals are still there, still given room to move across the field, but the palette has been reimagined into something deeper, bolder and more saturated while honouring the same design language the style is known for.

Each one is hand-knotted from 100% natural fibres in Afghanistan and completely one of a kind.

Rugs where the colour comes from the wool itself 🐏

These are our undyed Afghan Pashm rugs, hand-knotted in Shindand, Herat Province from 100% hand-spun Ghazni wool. The warm browns, deep chocolates and raw creams you see are the natural colour of the fleece, not a dye in sight. Long shaggy pile, bold tribal geometry, and a softness that surprises everyone who stands on one for the first time.

Long before written language, humans painted meaning onto cave walls. Persian weavers did the same thing on their rugs.

Every motif in this vintage Persian Ardabil runner was placed with intention. Running through the centre of the field is the Tree of Life, its roots reaching down into the earth, its branches climbing toward the heavens, connecting the two worlds. Birds rest in the branches, deer move through the field, and flowering vines fill the spaces in between 🌷

The rounded motifs reaching outward are known as the Mother Goddess, an ancient symbol of fertility, strength and nourishment. She has been woven into textiles across this region for centuries.

Both of these rugs have the same origin but they have a completely different look and feel underfoot.

The Chobi on top is known for its high knot count and low, tight pile. Up close you can see exactly how much precision goes into every square centimetre, the pattern is sharp, the surface is dense and the detail is unmistakable.

Beneath it is a newly woven Afghan rug using traditional weaving techniques. Thick, chunky pile, incredibly soft underfoot, with vibrant colours and a pattern that has a little more breathing room. A fresh interpretation of a craft that has not changed in centuries.

Both hand-knotted in Afghanistan, both made from hand-spun wool, just with completely different results 🤍
