Weeding the iris beds with Bonnie. Working this close to the soil gives you plenty of time for observation and today I noticed how many tiny spiders and ladybirds there were in the field and how there was a vast reduction in aphids. I have recently become seriously interested in regenerative agriculture and have decided that next year I am going to sow the interbed pathways with pasture which I can mow. The goals being to improve habitat for natural predators, increase soil biology, increase soil exudates and provide cover for the soil over our blistering summers. That’s the theory anyway!

WHICH BLUE DO YOU DO??? Time for show and tell?
..When you're at a party and someone asks you about your life and you inevitably get around to saying you grow irises - don't you love the response.... "Irises?! Oh I love the BLUE ones...

Well I love the blue ones too but which one?? So blue it's almost purple? Or a gentle blue? Blue as a contrast or perhaps blue as a backdrop? The variations in the world of bearded iris are many and varied.

I would absolutely love to see your favourite blue iris! Photos in the comments please.

Cherries and Cream (Barry Blyth 2017) is a favourite of mine. The combination of the buttery yellow standards and the glorious rich velvet falls is a bit of a showstopper. Has proven to be an excellent performer in the garden.

The "Oscar" for tall bearded iris is the Wister Medal, awarded by the The American Iris Society. At TenAcres we have a number of Wister Medal winners including the 2024 winner, the velveteen Rise Like a Phoenix.
This iris a multi award winner and absolutely stunning. Iris and roses are frequent pairings and Rise Like a Phoenix works brilliantly with the dark red of the Black Baccara hybrid tea or the gold of My Yellow. Under plant with black mondo grass for an unusual and striking combination.

Marital Bliss (Keppel 2016) is a confection of frothy ruffles. Very pretty and a popular pink at TenAcres. In our southern hemisphere winter months we iris lovers have to look over last season’s photos to get our fix!

Planting iris is a bit of a challenge with Bonnie and Charlie who are convinced that I am at ground level just to provide cuddles. Thank god iris are resilient because this latest row has had a lot of Border Terrier love!

Orange. A most polarising colour in the garden. Part of the reason is that gardeners often lack confidence in how to use it, but in reality it is extremely adaptable - almost more than white! Don't believe me? Take a look here.
1) Avalon Sunset photographed at TenAcres. It absolutely glows when a clump is in flower and very useful as a mass planting.
2) Orange iris as a contrast. The bright orange adds the "pop" to a cool colour scheme of blues and violets.
3) Orange as a friend to lime green. Gardeners are understanding the use of "green" as a colour and lime green is a perfect foil for orange.
4) Orange as an anchor for "rustic" colour schemes. Co plant with creams and russet reds for a stunningly elegant combination.

So embrace your inner sunset and seek out orange.

Happy Mother’s Day! As all iris growers know - we pay homage to “mothers” all year. A healthy mother rhizome produces healthy pups/increases and the next generation of iris are born. A wonderful metaphor and reminder to all of us who are mothers/have mothers past and present that a a bit of cherishing never goes astray, because a happy, healthy mum goes a long way to creating a happy, healthy family.

Iris make it to the 2026 Met Gala! Are you, like me, a bit of a fashion admirer (NOTE - I said admirer not participant!). I was very happy to see British star Charli xcx paying homage to artists Van Gogh and Yves Saint Laurent shared passion for iris represented in this year’s theme “Costume Art”. She wore a simple black dress decorated with a resin iris on the front. Gorgeous.

As gardeners with a passion for iris we need to make some tough decisions. Do we:
a) Get entranced by all the lovely new varieties and buy first/decide where to plant later?
b) Buy them with the purpose of creating seasonal "hero" plants in a landscape.
c) Specifically select an iris which fits into your overall garden palette.
d) Buy for mass planting and combine gorgeous architectural foliage with once a year stop in your tracks "wow"
Which one are you?
