Mature trees aren’t something we can simply replace.

They are decades of shade, cooling, habitat, food, nesting places and biodiversity that already exists right here in our suburbs. Planting new trees matters, but protecting the mature canopy we already have matters just as much.

I’m adding my voice to the community calling for the mature trees at Hilton Park to be retained and for alternatives that allow us to create spaces for people without sacrificing established habitat to do it.

If you’re a City of Fremantle resident or ratepayer, please go along to the Electors Meeting on Tuesday 15 September and vote to save the trees. Even if you can’t vote, go along and show your support for the community fighting to keep them standing.

We need more canopy in our suburbs, not less. Every mature tree counts.

A great verge garden starts with a little planning.

According to our Baileys Verge Awards judges, it starts with three things: water well, plant local and plant for impact.

Get your watering system sorted first so your verge has the support it needs to thrive.

Choose hyperlocal plants suited to your specific growing conditions, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Then make those plants count. Instead of planting one of everything, group them in threes, fives or sevens to create a stronger visual impact.

Simple choices can make a big difference to how your verge looks and grows.

Whether you’ve created a stand-out verge of your own, or know someone who deserves a helping hand, Baileys Verge Awards are open now with more than $25,000 in prizes on offer, including a $10,000 cash award for Perth’s Best Verge and three $5,000 verge makeover.

“To the internet strangers who became so much more.

Many of you are no longer strangers. You are real people in my life now, people I’ve met, laughed with, learned from and grown alongside.”

And then there’s this bunch.

My Perth garden and nature nerd community. My chosen family.

Most of us met because at some point one of us posted something about a plant, a bug, a garden or some other niche thing on the internet and another thought, yep, you’re my kind of person.

Somewhere along the way, internet strangers became real life friends.

One of my favourite parts of this whole journey has been finding my people. And having so many of them in one room to celebrate my book with me was pretty bloody special.

A little sneak peak from the book launch event laurensmart.photography 🥰🥰

A little piece of Rewilding Suburbia has made its way into the spring edition of Sanctuary Magazine.

Reimagine the way we play - the kids section of my book, is all about creating spaces where kids can explore, get messy, grow food, notice bugs and build a connection with the natural world.

Because if we want to raise the next generation of people who will care for our planet, we first need to give them the chance to know it, love it and feel connected to it.

And that connection can start right at home.

September is Biodiversity Month, so here’s your reminder that growing food and growing biodiversity don’t have to be two separate things.

In fact, they work better together!

More plant diversity, more life in the soil, more flowers, more insects, more habitat. All of those little relationships help build a garden that’s healthier, more productive and more resilient when conditions change.

Let your herbs flower. Grow flowers amongst your veggies. Keep the soil covered. Make room for bugs. Let things get a little bit messy.

Your food garden can feed you AND a whole lot of other life at the same time.

Grow more than food 🌱🌸🦋🦎🐞

Of all the unlikely friendships life has thrown at me, this one might take the cake!!

Meg couldn’t make it to my book launch last night, so she sent me the most beautiful flowers instead.

Nothing quite says ‘life is weird and wonderful’ like being so bloody lucky to have your partner’s ex firmly in your corner 😂

Love you, Meg!! Wouldn’t have it any other way xx

Rewilding Suburbia is officially out in the wild today, so I posed with it the way men pose with fish…

She’s a beauty. Put up a hell of a fight.

Released into bookstores immediately after these photos.

At some point I looked at this backyard and thought, you know what this needs? Less paving. No regrets.

I’m in today’s Sunday Times Magazine, with a beautiful feature about how this whole slightly wild adventure began, my book and, of course, my love of verge gardens.

From becoming completely obsessed with what was happening in my own backyard, to writing a book about it. Still not entirely sure how that happened.

I also chat about the Baileys Verge Awards and what I’ll be looking for as a judge this year.
