Vertical access is more than simply moving people between floors.

Based on our day-to-day planning and design experience, positioning stairs and elevators can be one of the most crucial and sometimes trickiest parts of a project. Their location can influence circulation, accessibility, emergency egress, usable floor area, structural coordination and the overall experience of the building.

Material selection also matters. Glass, concrete, steel and timber each bring different considerations relating to durability, maintenance, safety, cost and design character.

Resolving these elements early can help reduce unnecessary redesign and create a more practical, coordinated outcome.

We are pleased to share one of our current projects: an 18-unit multi-dwelling development in Edmondson Park.

From the outset, the site presented an interesting challenge, with an irregular lot shape and varying street levels. Rather than viewing these conditions as limitations, our design team used them to guide the planning and layout of the development.

Each dwelling has been carefully positioned to maximise the site’s potential while addressing access, circulation, setbacks, private open space, parking and the natural fall of the street. The result is a considered design that uses the available land efficiently while responding to the relevant planning requirements.

We are excited to help shape this project and look forward for more progress.

Designing a multi-dwelling development on a large site involves more than fitting several homes onto the land.

Our team has experience working with complex sites, including trapezoidal, triangular, curved and irregularly shaped lots. These conditions may influence the layout and can also create opportunities for smarter design solutions.

We're looking beyond the site boundary.

Thoughtful site development begins with understanding the bigger picture. For community spaces such as parks and multi-use courts, our design team considers more than the structures placed within the site.

We look at the surrounding neighbourhood, natural terrain, access points, pedestrian movement, landscaping and how people will experience and connect with the space.

These considerations help us answer important questions early:

• How does the development respond to the existing terrain?
• Can people move through the site safely and comfortably?
• How will the space connect with its neighbourhood?
• Can the design support different community activities and future needs?

At PSD, our role is to bring these elements together, turning each site’s opportunities and constraints into a practical, considered design outcome.

Every site is unique, but no site exists in isolation. It is part of a wider community.
