Did you know creating a home burial site can be simple and affordable? Michael Judd explains that it doesnโ€™t require much land and can be a meaningful way to keep loved ones closeโ€”while saving significant costs over generations.

OMG! Volgende week is het zo ver! ๐Ÿฅณ ๐Ÿ’ฅ
Dรฉ voedselbos weekopleiding (15-20 juni)

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ Zoals iedere editie is ook deze uitverkocht. Laat weten als je er de volgende keer bij wil zijn.

Of als je hier รฉรฉรฉcht nood aan hebt, laat ook weten, wie weet kunnen we nog iets regelen...

We need to build more smilands to stop the desert in Europe โ›๏ธ

What are they? Ditches dug on contour to catch runoff water โค๏ธ

At Ten Lives, we dug 69 Smilands in the slopes of the festival site, to create islands of biodiversity that would kick start the natural regeneration of this beautiful, but struggling, landscape.

But thereโ€™s a special way to create a Smiland, this caroussel will take you through the steps.

You can try this on your land and you can also adopt one of the Smilands we dug for you in April 2026

At the end of my opening keynote, I asked the audience to do the following:

We're constantly talking about:
โ€ข creating a better future
โ€ข wanting to be more regenerative
โ€ข more justice and fairness

For humanity.

But there is one thing we often forget: a new future is mostly built on ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ

I'm raised extremely rationally, so I must admit I was a bit scared to ask this to the audience:

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ Now, please turn to your neighbor and look each other in the eyes for one minute, in silence

๐Ÿ˜ฎ At first, people were a bit uneasy; after all, we're in the European Commission, right, where we are serious people doing serious stuff.

People were also laughing a bit.

But.. after twenty seconds, the room went silent. People took on the challenge.

They took the time to connect. All kind of emotions surfaced.

Silence

"You've just seen humanity" I said.

And people started applauding.

Fiew

Why is it so strange and difficult for human beings to embrace our true nature?
Why did it take me so much courage to do one of the most primal things ever
And why is it so hard to look each other in the eyes?

I was afraid people would think this is some sort of spiritual mumbo jumbo.

But how far have we been disconnected to even think that?

It's just being human.

๐Ÿค” What gave me the courage then to do this anyway?

The present has proven that rationality alone will not solve the world's challenges.

If you don't believe this, do what I otherwise never advise to do: watch the news

We need human ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ง๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง and we need ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ.

For those committed to natural living and food forestry, becoming sustenance for trees can be the ultimate cycle. Michael Judd highlights how end-of-life choices matterโ€”without a plan, families may choose cremation or caskets that use resources and introduce harmful chemicals.

Trees are the solution for heat waves ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Why the heck aren't we planting more of them?

We can easily cool down the planet with 2ยฐC by planting 550 million hectares of trees.

Thats doubling the Amazon rainforest

That can be trees in cities like Medellin, Colombia where they did already lower temperatures with 2ยฐC.

That can be natural forests or rewilding

But also polyculture tree plantations for wood production

Don't forget your garden or even your balcony or roof

And of course: half of the world's land is farmland: we need to plant gazillions of food producing trees so farmers have more income and are better prepared for climate extremes.

Starting a green burial site earned Michael Judd the nickname โ€œThe Green Undertaker.โ€ The bureaucracy was intenseโ€“it was something new. But green burial is actually simple: a return to traditional, natural practices, without embalming.

Farm animals need to eat more trees ๐ŸŒณ

They've been doing it since forever

It's more sustainable & better for their health

How do we do it?

Simple: it's called agriculture + forestry = also known as agroforestry

Eco-death design: what happens after we die? Michael Judd explores how composting our bodies can complete the cycle โ€“ returning nutrients to the earth as a final act of service. Without natural burial, the conventional system pollutes.
