At Kennedy Park, the masterplan doesn’t begin with buildings. It begins with the forces already at work: landscape, movement, existing connections, urban lines, and the climate the district will have to live with.

Those conditions shape the plan itself: where views open, where crossings happen, how blocks break down, where public space expands, where planting cools, filters and reconnects.

Regenerative urban design starts before architecture becomes an object. It starts with the ground, the voids, the microclimate and the relationships between them.

At Kennedy Park, climate is not something to accommodate afterwards. It is one of the authors.

At SIBCA Paris, Sebastian Moreno-Vacca and Manon Meskens will open up the thinking behind A*M’s upcoming Manifesto: how a practice rooted in Passive House evolved towards regenerative architecture, and why designing with climate, nature and people changes much more than energy performance.

The talk, Architecture for the New World, travels through projects from São Paulo to Antarctica, via Brussels, Luxembourg, Lille and New York. Different climates, scales and constraints, but one recurring question: how can architecture become part of the repair rather than simply reduce the damage?

At The Marnix, light is treated as a material in its own right : something to shape, filter and work with.

Screens and partitions in wood, fabric, solids and voids let daylight travel deep into the interior while creating privacy, intimacy and acoustic comfort. The same elements become protection when the sun gets too intense, turning light into a tool for comfort rather than just atmosphere.

Regenerative interiors, never one-dimensional:

Design with climate.
Design with nature.
Design with people.

One summer day away from drawings, deadlines, and carefully calibrated square metres.
The A*M team stepped outside for an off-site built around less measurable things: playing, laughing, talking, and spending time together without a project agenda attached.

No performance indicators were harmed. Team spirit may have improved.

Architecture for 40°C.
With parts of Europe already facing a fifth heatwave this year, we did not expect to get such a violent glimpse of the climate we were designing for so soon.

At Kennedy Park, Luxembourg, we approached urban planning as climate planning — and climate as an urban language.

Wind, water and vegetation become materials of urban design, just as perspective, alignments, steel, stone or timber are. Albedo, effusivity and emissivity become material properties, just like colour, texture or symbolism. Convection and evapotranspiration become principles of composition.

The diagrams shown here are not simply climate analyses. They shaped the project. Urban breezes, shade, water, vegetation, solar exposure and material choices were used to design the microclimate itself.

We designed for two climates: today’s climate and the degraded climate projected for 2060 under SSP5-8.5.

Kennedy Park is conceived as Luxembourg’s first regenerative district: transforming an existing urban site and park, restoring landscape and biodiversity, and integrating low-carbon architecture.

Climate is no longer something architecture responds to.
It is something we design with.

At The Marnix, integrated furniture was not added after the architecture. It was designed as part of it.
Multimedia, acoustics, signage, storage, and everyday use are brought together in a coherent system that extends the building’s identity into its interiors. Each element can be dismantled, reused, and reconditioned, allowing the spaces to evolve without starting again from zero.

Fewer objects competing for attention. More architecture doing the work.

Kennedy Park, awarded first prize ex aequo in the international competition, transforms an inward-looking site into an open, mixed-use district designed for the climate it will actually face.
The proposal combines circular design strategies, timber-hybrid construction, active mobility and the planting of 180 new trees to reduce urban heat and bring nature back into the city.
At its core lies a climate design approach using urban breezes, albedo, material effusivity and urban greenery as design tools to improve outdoor comfort and resilience under future climate scenarios.
Rather than a collection of isolated buildings, Kennedy Park is conceived as a living urban ecosystem: more porous, more connected and better equipped to adapt to a changing climate.

On July 28, Sebastian Moreno-Vacca will join Passive House Minnesota to present The Marnix: From Passive House to Regenerative Architecture. Retrofitting a 1965 Modernist Landmark.

The talk will look at how deep retrofit, adaptive reuse, and Passive House principles extended the life of the former ING headquarters by more than 50 years, while reducing primary energy by 85%, CO₂ emissions by 75%, and costs by 20% compared with a conventional renovation.

A case for keeping what exists, then asking considerably more of it.

Last week, Aline Branders joined Buildwise to focus on the new technical guidance for internal insulation of existing façades.
This is where renovation becomes real: hygrothermal behaviour, thermal bridges, airtightness, junctions, the small decisions that decide whether a retrofit is durable, healthy, and actually low-carbon.
Because regenerative renovation isn’t a slogan. It’s a detail set.
