Can plastic fit into a sustainably organized space?

Whether we like it or not, plastic is a part of our homes and our lives. A core part of the organizing process is containing items. While this doesn’t always need to mean using containers, nor does it mean those containers need to be plastic, plastic containers have some advantages in certain situations. They are usually easy to clean, they can provide protection from the elements (e.g., water), they come in versatile shapes and sizes, they can be transparent so you can see what’s inside, and they can be cost effective.

But what can you do about plastic when you are trying to organize in a more environmentally sustainable way? Here are some guidelines to keep in mind this , and every time of the year:

Repurpose plastic items in your home as organizational products.

Consider obtaining good-quality second-hand organizing products (e.g., Marketplace, freecycle groups, thrift shops, hand-me-downs from family/friends).

If purchasing new plastic items, look for those that have good online reviews, particularly with respect to durability. If you are in store, look for items that feel sturdy rather than flimsy.

If purchasing new plastic items, try purchasing items that can be flexible and used for a variety of purposes, rather than something that cannot be repurposed in the future if needs change.

Not every item needs to be put into a container! When appropriate, consider keeping some items not in containers (e.g., in a pantry).

And of course, the most important one of all...declutter before you organize! This will limit the number of organizing products you will need.

Happy sustainable organizing!

sustainable decluttering reshare!

“What do I do with the stuff I am choosing to get rid of?!” is a common concern I hear from clients.

Decluttering involves not only the intentional decision making of what brings value to your life (keep) and what no longer serves your broader goals/values (discard), but also the intentional decision making around what to do with the things you discard.

You have so many choices of what to do with the items you are decluttering. Having a professional by your side to help you make these decisions can help you reach your goals while also being friendly to our Earth.

I’m an anti-perfectionist in every way possible…including my sustainability practices. If I could do everything perfectly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our planet, I would. But this isn’t a reality for me, and it’s probably not for you either.

Does this mean I throw my hands up and say “What’s the point?!” No, it does not! Does it mean I throw everything in the black bag instead of recycling, reusing, repairing, or donating items? No, it does not! Does it mean I go out and buy, buy, buy without consideration for the environmental impact of my consumption? Do, it does not!

I am thoughtful and intentional about my purchases. I keep looking at the new recycling guidelines in my area to figure out what I can now recycle that I couldn’t before. I have a corner of my garage that I devote to mine and my client’s electronic and textile recycling items until I have a chance to drop them off for proper disposal.

But I also sometimes buy things that are in excess of what I need (gasp!). And sometimes these items are new instead of thrifted/second-hand. I don’t always make the effort to thoroughly clean my jars/bottles, knowing that this might mean they don’t get recycled. And I eat beef…lots of beef (it’s just too delicious and I haven’t had success quitting)!

Living a perfectly sustainable life, and running a perfectly sustainable business, are just not realities for me. I try my best in both domains of my life and I have to accept my imperfections in this area, just as I do in decluttering and organizing my own home and my client’s homes.

With fast approaching, it might be time to think about how you might move toward living a more sustainable lifestyle while letting go of ideas about being perfect at it. Let me know in the comments 1 thing you’d like to change moving forward to practice sustainability imperfectly!

A perfect marriage between my old career as a mental health care professional and my current career as a professional organizer.

I meet and speak to people at all stages of change with respect to their decluttering and organizing journey (except for pre-contemplation–I usually hear from those people’s spouses, parents, or adult children).

Which stage of change are you at?

Precontemplation: you’re not ready to declutter or get organized; you don’t recognize a need to do so [Ariel]

Contemplation: you recognize that the clutter or disorganization in your space may be causing stress or practical problems and you may consider doing something about it [Mirabel]

Preparation: you feel ready to take steps toward decluttering and organizing your space and may start making small changes or look into hiring an organizer to help [Belle]

Action: You are actively decluttering and organizing your space, alone or with support, making your life function better as you go through the process [Elsa]

Maintenance: You’re working to keep your space tidy and organized and recognize the need for careful consumption and for ongoing decluttering

It’s amazing to hear the language shift from someone who is in an early stage to those who are actively engaged in the process or who now have confidence in their home and in their ability to keep their space organized.

If you’re in the Preparation stage and want support, reach out to chat about the role I can play in your journey to a more functional and calm home and life.

P.S. If you’ve been following me for a long time (and pay attention to the song choices I use), you may have noticed that I love to use song lyrics as inspiration for content I create.

P.P.S. I’m such a nerd, and I don’t care!

🥳 Four years in business for One Space at a Time Professional Organizing. 🥳

While I’m incredibly proud of this milestone, what I really celebrate… is you.

The families who can eat at their dining tables again and get out of the front door on time.
The business owners who found focus and systems that work.
The clients who can finally park in their garage.
The clients who can mobilize safely around their homes.
The children and teens who have space to play and learn.
The women who no longer feel ashamed to open their front door to family and friends.
The creatives who let go of some of their stuff so that they could enjoy the stuff they kept.
The neurodivergent folks who let go of their self-criticism and learned strategies that better matched their style.

Yes, this is my anniversary. But the real wins? They belong to the people who said, “I can’t do this alone” and let me walk beside them and guide them through the process.

I’ve watched clients breathe easier in their own homes.
I’ve seen tears and fear turn into confidence.
I’ve seen overwhelm transform into calm.

Professional organizing isn’t about pretty bins or perfectly folded drawers. It’s about creating space, physically and mentally, for the life you actually want to live.

So today, I’m celebrating four years of courage. Four years of trust. Four years of watching lives change one space at a time.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Here’s to the next chapter, and to more calm, more clarity, and more freedom in the homes of the people I get to serve.

If you’ve been one of the many clients who I’ve had a chance to work with, please share your journey with others so they know they can reach out for support.

A huge thank you to .photo for helping me capture these photos! A little way to let myself celebrate me and how far I’ve come on this journey.

The pride my clients feel when they tackle a space on their own is incredible to witness. As part of my Team Effort Approach (one of the three models of service I offer), my clients complete “homework” between our sessions. The homework can range from sorting through a box of items, to decluttering an entire closet.

These before and after photos reflect work that my clients tackled independently based on the education they received during our work together and guidance around the best way to approach the work independently.

For some of my clients, these homework exercises are hard! They had to incorporate the education received during our sessions, encouragement and emotional support, a shift in mindset, and strategies to accomplish their task. For others, minimal education and some accountability was all they needed to get the task accomplished on their own. Either way, they feel proud of themselves, and so do I.

Head to onespaceatatime.ca to check out my different models of service to see which one is right for you…or for someone you know who you think might be ready to get the support they deserve.

It’s a joy to hear words of gratitude like these! So many of my clients judge themselves harshly for not having a home that looks magazine worthy every moment. They call themselves messy or lazy, when in fact, they just haven’t learned ways of getting organized or staying organized that work with who they are.

When we pay attention to our habits, our personality, our brain, and our behaviour, we’re able to come up with organizing systems that are unique to us. Systems that we are more successful at keeping up with. Systems that allow us to build confidence in our abilities, even when we aren’t perfect.

Client Quote: “I cannot recommend Corrie enough. She is kind, not judgemental and she educates you on how to maintain an organized space in a way that works for you. I really struggled with some areas and would judge myself for being messy. It turns out that with a bit of help from Corrie, I wasn’t messy but just needed a system that worked for me. It also felt good that all the things being cleared out were being recycled or donated. I would hire Corrie’s services again in a heartbeat.”

What a win for my client!

A staple in my product library…bamboo drawer dividers! I keep a very small amount of products in my home to bring to clients’ homes. This is for two reasons:

1) We should always deal with the decluttering stage before we get to organizing, and we won’t know what’s needed until that phase is done.

2) I try to be as environmentally sustainable as possible in my work with clients, and so I only recommend products when I feel that they are necessary for my clients to maintain the organization in their home.

Drawer dividers are one of the very few organizing products that I feel are so versatile that they deserve a spot in my small product closet. Here’s why I love them so much:

🟢They can be moved around over time as we make changes to where things are stored in our homes (and move with us when we move to a new home).

🟢They help to contain items of a similar type, keeping them separate from other items.

🟢They provide structure to a space, prompting our brains to put items back where they belong.

🟢They break down a larger space into smaller spaces to match the size of the objects contained…this makes it easier to see what you have and access it easily.

🟢They tend to be good quality, lasting many years without breaking.

🟢They can be used in so many areas of the home (kitchen drawers, dresser drawers, desk drawers, junk drawers, etc.).

If you’ve got a drawer that could use some fine tuning (after decluttering of course), consider whether bamboo drawer dividers could help to keep things more organized over time.

When I enter your home, I want you to know who is walking through that door. It takes a lot of courage to invite a stranger into your home to show them the struggles you’re having and to ask for help.

These little tid bits about me aren’t actually what’s important for you to know, though. But there are some things I DO need you to know about me. Things to know so you can feel comfortable reaching out for help. Things to know so that you don’t feel as anxious about having me walk through that door and chatting with you about how we can make your home a more functional, calm, and beautiful place.

I need you to know that I, too, am an imperfect person. We all are…and I have no expectations that you become perfectly organized through our work together.

I need you to know that you are the expert on you, and no amount of expertise that I have in organizing can take away your control of the process. We will always work collaboratively and I will trust you to know yourself best.

I need you to know that I’m not judging you or your home harshly, even if you are judging yourself that way.

I need you to know that I want you to succeed, even if that means you do it partly without me. I will adjust the amount of support I provide to make it work for you.

And lastly, I need you to know that you deserve the support to get yourself organized, even when other people tell you that you “should” be able to do it yourself.

Sometimes knowing the little insignificant things about someone’s life can help you feel more comfortable, they serve as a starting point to a conversation. So feel free to share in the comments about your most watched movie, how you relax, or what you hate doing most in your house. And I hope that if you’ve been holding off on inviting an organizer into your home and life, that this year your biggest risk is moving forward with this important step. You won’t regret it!

Office/art room transformation Part 2…where details matter!

Here are some of my favourite things we did in this office/art room to make it functional and fun. Make sure you check back to my last reel to see the overall picture of the before and after organizing transformation.

🟢 Adult art supplies are kept separately from kids art supplies…a new IKEA Pax unit was brought in to store all of my clients art and hobby supplies, while a new desk was brought in to store the kid supplies and to function as a space to actually be creative (instead of using the work desk or the dining table as had been the case before)

🟢 Everything was labeled to make maintenance easier…labels were placed on shelf fronts and drawer tops to ease visibility and to allow for flexibility in the size of the categories

🟢 A bin sits under the art desk to house the kid’s completed artwork (not shown in the photos)...the rule is that once the bin is full, they go through the items together and do a declutter

🟢 Moving the paint supplies into a wheeled cart (instead of a dark set of stationary drawers) means she can see all of her supplies, and she can move it around to wherever she’s placed her easel based on the lighting

🟢 Having a designated spot for current/ongoing projects means that they don’t need to all sit out on the desk waiting to be returned to, they can be tucked away while other projects are being worked on, but still staying at the top of mind whenever that drawer is opened

🟢 We transformed a previously empty IKEA Pax wardrobe into a functional storage unit for her work and office supplies, bringing items in from multiple areas around the house. Now, she has a centralized area right at her fingertips.

🟢 And who doesn’t love a gift wrapping station in their office area?…perfect for this time of year

Do you have a favourite part of your art area? What works for you?

I look like a totally different person!!! But it’s still me and I will still always tell my clients that there is no such thing as a perfect organizing system. Organizing is as much about our behaviour as it is about the physical/environmental changes or organizational products put in place. None of us are perfect and behaviour change is hard, even for people who have more natural organizing skills. Our lives are busy, we have lots of priorities, and being “perfectly” tidy or organized is just not always going to fall right at the top of that priority list.

I’m still using this basket system because it’s working well enough for me and my family. Clothes often enough end up in the basket and it comes upstairs at bedtime routine time often enough for me to stick with using it. It does help the space feel less cluttered because clothes are less often all over the floor. My kids have also naturally started using it for things other than clothes that need to go upstairs at the end of the day (e.g., books, hair elastics, stuffies).

So, if you don’t yet have any system in place to capture your kids (or your own) clothes that get thrown all over the place, try this one out and see if it is good enough for your household!

If you tried the system after seeing my reel 2.5 years ago, I’d love to hear in the comments how it has been working for you! What would you rate it out of 10?
