Tech Then vs. Tech Now

Technology in seniors housing has come a LONG way…

THEN: A giant ring of keys
NOW: Electronic access control & programmable credentials

THEN: Desk phones, tangled cords & complicated phone systems
NOW: Flexible cloud-based phone systems

THEN: The TV cart, VHS tapes & “Has anyone seen the remote?”
NOW: Integrated AV, digital displays & modern entertainment technology

Some upgrades we barely notice anymore…until we remember what we used to work with.

What piece of “old-school” technology do you remember using?

Bonus points if there was a VHS rewinder involved.

PCS Tech Tip of the Week: The “What Does This Button Do?” Rule

If nobody knows what it does… maybe don’t press it just to find out...

Mystery switches, unlabeled cables and forgotten equipment have a funny way of becoming very important at the worst possible time.

Take a few minutes to identify unfamiliar technology in your electrical, telecom and equipment rooms. Future-you — and your service technician — will appreciate it.

Bonus tip: If the answer is, “I think Bob knows…” it’s definitely time to label it.

Great AV should do more than look and sound good — it should make spaces easier to use, more engaging, and more connected.

From theatre and entertainment systems to digital signage, displays, audio, and presentation technology, PCS designs and installs AV solutions built around how each space will actually be used.

Whether it’s creating a better entertainment experience for residents, improving communication in common areas, or equipping a meeting space with reliable technology, we help bring it all together.

🔊 Better sound.
📺 Better visuals.
🎬 Better experiences.
🤝 One experienced technology partner.

Nobody notices the Wi-Fi when it works!

Or the door access. Or the phones. Or the paging system. 😄

But the second one stops working...

👀 “Who do we call?”

The best building technology is often the technology you barely think about — because it’s simply doing its job in the background.

Here’s to all the hardworking technology quietly keeping buildings connected today!

Tech Tip: The “Can You Hear Me Now?” Walk

When was the last time someone actually walked the building while the paging system was being tested?

A page can sound perfectly fine at the head-end but be too quiet, distorted or completely missed in certain areas of the building.

Tech Tip: Periodically do a listening walk through hallways and common areas during a routine paging test. Pay attention to areas where announcements are difficult to hear or understand.

Because “the page worked” and “everyone heard the page” aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Your Team Is Mobile. Your Phone System Should Be Too.

In seniors housing, important calls don’t always arrive when someone is sitting beside a desk phone.

A cloud-based phone system can help keep your team connected whether they’re at reception, in an office, elsewhere in the community—or even off-site.

With the right solution, communities can benefit from:

✓ Calls that can follow staff to different devices
✓ Easier management of extensions, users and locations
✓ Less reliance on aging on-site phone equipment
✓ Greater flexibility as staffing and operational needs change
✓ One communications platform across multiple communities
✓ Business continuity options when the unexpected happens

For seniors housing operators, moving communications to the cloud isn’t just about upgrading the phones...

It’s about making it easier for people to reach the right person, wherever they happen to be.

Tech Tip of the Week: The “Reboot Before You Replace” Rule

When technology starts acting strangely, it’s easy to assume something is broken. Before you call it quits, try one of the oldest tricks in the tech-support playbook: reboot it.

A proper restart can clear temporary glitches, reset network connections, free up system resources, and stop processes that may have become stuck in the background.

That can help with things like:

-Slow or unresponsive devices
-Dropped or unreliable network connections
-Apps or programs that suddenly stop working
-Phones, computers, or other devices behaving unpredictably
-Equipment that appears connected but isn’t communicating properly

PCS Tech Tip: If it’s safe and appropriate to do so, perform a proper restart before assuming a device has failed. And remember—restarting isn’t always the same as simply turning something off and immediately back on. Give the device time to fully shut down before powering it back up.

One important exception: don’t randomly reboot critical building, life-safety, network, or emergency systems. Those systems may require a specific restart procedure or technical support.

Sometimes the smartest troubleshooting tool isn’t a new piece of equipment.

It’s the power button.
