The window treatment Calgary homeowners ask about most once summer hits.

Solar shades are engineered to cut UV and glare without blocking your view or darkening your room. They work by controlling the fabric's openness factor; the percentage of the weave that allows light through. Lower openness means more privacy and glare reduction. Higher openness means more of your view and more natural brightness.

For Calgary homes specifically, we typically recommend a 3–5% openness factor for west and south-facing rooms that get direct afternoon sun, and a 10% openness factor for rooms where you want glare management with maximum brightness.

The only thing that changed? The windows.

This is why we always say the windows are where a room either comes together or falls apart. Builder-grade horizontal blinds do a job but custom window treatments finish a space.

What made the difference here: panels hung at ceiling height, extending 6 inches beyond the window frame on each side, in a fabric weight that reads as intentional rather than functional. These are the details that look expensive without necessarily costing more.
