Introducing intern Architect, Mayra Prestes!

Originally from Brazil, Mayra joined 9Y in 2023 and became an Intern Architect in 2024. She graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in 2018 and worked independently for three years before moving to Prince Edward Island in 2022 to pursue a Graphic Design diploma at Holland College. While studying, she represented PEI at the 2024 Skills Canada competition in Quebec.

Mayra is inspired by the ability of thoughtful design to shape how people feel and experience a space.

Outside of work, she enjoys quiet walks in nature, swimming, ice skating, planning future travels, and spending time with her family.

A sneak peek at some of our interior design concepts for the Abegweit First Nations Community Recreation Centre — designed in collaboration with Architecture49.

The project envisioned a net-zero, climate-resilient community hub bringing together recreation, wellness, culture, and gathering spaces for Abegweit First Nation and the broader community.

Our design focused on openness, movement, natural light, and creating warm, welcoming spaces that feel active and connected throughout the building.

Grateful for the opportunity to help imagine what this important community space could become.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been proud to re-introduce members of our team — the people whose creativity and curiosity shape our studio every day. While each person brings their own perspective and strengths to the practice, together we form a shared vision.

As a firm - we would like to share who we are!

9Y is an architecture and design studio based in Prince Edward Island. Our studio’s name is inspired by the expression “the whole nine yards,” meaning everything or all encompassing, and reflects our commitment to exploring all facets of design.

When we launched the studio in 2017, our goal was to create a place where collaboration and creativity could thrive — a studio where people cared as much about why they design as what they design. Before we even had our first commission, we built one ourselves. That experience set the tone for the practice: architecture as a catalyst for participation, connection, and community improvement.

That same energy continues to drive our work today. We bring it to every drawing, every conversation, and every site visit. Each project begins with listening carefully, collaborating openly, and designing with a deep respect for place. For us, architecture isn’t only about what we build — it’s about who we build it with and the impact it leaves behind.

The nature of our practice allows us to provide a diverse range of design services including architecture, interior design, object and furniture design, and custom art installations.

Since founding the studio, our work has been recognized nationally through the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Emerging Architectural Practice Award and an RAIC National Urban Design Award. Our projects and ideas have also been featured in a number of architectural and design publications, helping share the stories of thoughtful, community-driven design emerging from Atlantic Canada.

We are proud of the things that drive us and our passion to make a positive impact in our community!

Introducing Founding Partner, Shallyn Hendry!

Born and raised on Prince Edward Island, her work is rooted in a strong connection to place, community, and public life.

She holds a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Design from Dalhousie University, along with a diploma in Engineering from the University of Prince Edward Island. Her early academic work explored social architecture and vernacular building traditions and she has carried that interest into her practice.

She was the lead architect for the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre, a nationally recognized civic project and cultural hub, and has been a key figure in advancing off-site construction in Atlantic Canada, including leading the design of one of the largest volumetric modular housing projects in the country.

Shallyn is an active voice in the profession through lectures, advocacy, and research. Through her practice she continues to champion architecture as a tool for public good—bringing together design innovation, collaboration, and a deep respect for place.
