I’ve been called in again to save a job gone wrong!!
My new customer called me in to salvage the refinishing job they hired a cheap guy to do their staircases.
This double staircase was in honey oak. The guy they got demanded money up front (they paid in full ) and then weeks turned into months and then two years of dealing with this guy they finally blocked him and called me to fix it. They kept hopping he would finish the job because he had been paid. And could not go to the authorities because they paid him in cash and there is no paper trail or receipt of money transferred.
Not only did the guy not finish it, he butchered it!!
Following a proper process of refinishing wood and product application and dry times are essential to achieving a professional refinishing look for any paint or stain project.
-He left carpet staples in and painted over them.
-He sanded down so far on the treads but not in between the spindles so that now there is a bump.
-He used a water based primer on all the spindles and risers so now it is peeling off.
-He left sanding mini circles in the grain of the wood before staining.
Please ! Do not hire because they are cheap, you will get a cheap job! Do not pay all up front , I typically ask for 30% to start and the remainder when the job is finished!!! It shows the person will deliver quality workmanship and at a timely manner. And this shows they value their work!
