Riverdene Garden Centre

Riverdene Garden Centre There’s just something magical about being surrounded by plants. Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada. Welcome and thanks for visiting our page.

We are a family owned and operated greenhouse located in southwest Saskatchewan in the thriving community of Swift Current. The greenhouse has a long history, established by Vern Smith in 1954, purchased by Sherman & Doreen Lyngstad in 1986. Still at the original location and still using the original buildings, we strive for consistent high quality in every plant we produce.

NURSERY DEAL

Rain always gets us dreaming of our yards, so this weekend, if you buy 2 or more nursery products (trees and shrubs), you'll get $10 off your MYKE Tree and Shrub.

MYKE is a powdery type product containing fungi which create a beneficial relationship with your plants root system. It basically creates a network throughout the soil, extending your plants root system and giving it access to more water and nutrients. This helps your plant establish more quickly and have a healthy start to its life in your yard.

Begonias!

I love to use begonias in my mixed containers as a filler. They typically have a nice mounded habit, and depending on the variety, can be busting with blooms. Here's a brief summary of the begonia varieties we carry. When watering, allow the top couple inches of soil to dry between waterings.

For shade (morning sun only):
Canary Wing begonia - chartreuse foliage with small pink or red flowers
Non-stop begonias - mounded habit with lots of single and double blooms. Wife range of colours
I'conia and I'candy - larger mounded habit, lots of blooms
Rex begonias - grown for foliage, unique leaves

For sun:
Solenia begonias -lots of flowers, can handle full sun, just don't leave water on the leaves during the hottest part of the day.

Cutting back hydrangeas in the spring (only for Smooth and Panicle Hydrangeas).

Just for hydrangeas that bloom in new growth. Use clean snips, and cut the branch off just above a set of leaf buds. Remove branches that are crossing and rubbing on each other.

Clean your snips between plants to prevent transferring potential disease.

Also, remove tags from plants at the time of planting. Elastic with wind can cause damage to the bark.

African Daisies

Great in full sun with well draining soil. African Daisies are great for adding texture to mixed combinations. They come in a wide range of colours great for contrast or mixing with similar shades.

If I was using an osteo in my mixed container, I would add it to other types of fillers to create depth and texture within my container.

Petchoa Supercals

A cross between a petunia and a calibrachoa. These flowers hold up to the rain (the occasional one we happen to get) better than most petunias. They have a mounded to trailing habit, making them great for hanging baskets, containers and mass plantings in the ground. Also, noticeably less sticky than petunias!

Spillers!

Spillers do just that, spill over the edge of the container. They can be full like sweet potato vine, or dainty like creeping Jenny. They're great for adding depth and texture to your mixed containers.

Great spiller options include:
Petunias, calibrachoa, sweet potato vine, creeping Jenny, wire vine, lophos, Mezoo, vinca, ivy, lobelia, bacopa, verbena, (some types of) coleus, fuchsia, and many more!

If you need help picking out the best trailer for your container, let us know!

Fillers!

Fillers are used to do just that, fill in the space in your container. They typically have a mounded or mounded -trailing habit and will spread to cover the soil and fill in the space in your container. I like to mix up my fillers in complimentary colours to add texture and contrast to my containers.

Great options for fillers include:
Geraniums, begonias, osteos, calibrachoa, impatiens, petunias, dahlias, lantana, verbena, strawflower, coleus, fuchsia, browalia, and many others!
