Naturalistic planting has been the direction in garden design for several years: looser borders, meadow grasses, edges deliberately blurred. Hardscape has moved much more slowly, and most gardens still put all that softness up against a rectangular grid; the join is where the design gives itself away.

Free-form slabs are the version of that shift you walk on. No two outlines alike, so the surface curves where the planting curves. One fixed thickness of 40 mm, so it still sits on a single plane. Loose above, disciplined underneath. Kaarma, Orgita and Selgase dolomite, wire-sawn at our factory on Saaremaa.

A loose garden still needs a level surface. That is the objection to irregular paving, and it is answered by how the slabs are cut.

Free-form slabs vary in outline only. The thickness is fixed at 40 mm, so however different the pieces are, the finished surface still sits on a single plane.

Gardens stopped being straight some years ago. Borders loosened, lawn gave way to grasses, and the edge between planted and wild was blurred on purpose.

The paving didn’t follow, as most gardens still meet all that softness with a rectangular grid, and the join is the part that looks wrong without anyone quite naming why.

A day at our Kaarma quarry and plant with leading architects from Estonia and Latvia. They came to meet the stone because a picture cannot show them what a quarry can.

A sample is 20 × 20 cm. The stone comes out in layers a metre thick. You have to stand in front of it to grasp what it can become.

Reval limestone, brushed. The brushing opens the stone’s natural pattern and leaves a surface that’s leathery to the touch,matte, softly worn, never glossy. Grey, unsorted in tone.

Kaarma dolomite, honed. Saaremaa’s own natural stone, quarried near Kuressaare and long called Saaremaa marble. Fine-grained, light to bluish-grey, over 400 million years in the making. Weather-resistant, for façades and interiors alike. Pores unfilled.
