At Courtney Avenue, the decorative details were developed as part of the architecture itself.

From the fireplace surround to the mouldings and plasterwork, each element was considered in relation to the proportions and character of the room. Drawing on a classical language, but made specifically for this home.

The result is detailed without feeling decorative for decoration’s sake. Everything has its place.

Sometimes it’s a flower, a leaf, a particular shade seen outside, and later that same feeling turns up in a velvet, a stone or a detail in a room.

I take a lot of photos when I travel, not always of the obvious things. A colour combination, a shopfront, a floor, a ceiling, an unexpected material. Most of them stay in the back of my mind until something clicks on a project later.

When a room starts as little more than a shell, every
decision has to work harder.

For this North London space, we’re building the scheme
layer by layer, panelling, pattern, joinery, lighting and
furniture, with each element designed to add character
without competing with the next.

The render shows where it’s heading: layered, expressive
and still completely cohesive.

When I travel, I’m always collecting things without really meaning to. Colours, textures, combinations of materials, the way something has aged, the tone of the light. I usually don’t know where any of it will end up, but eventually it finds its way into a designed space.
