This project came to us following a Class Q approval for the conversion of an existing agricultural building. We were instructed to develop a follow up scheme for three detached dwellings, arranged around a shared courtyard.

The design intent is to look like the dwellings have always been part of the landscape, whilst benefitting from modern construction, maximising the views across the beautiful landscape and using a palette of natural stone, timber cladding and slate to create a strong connection to the surrounding area.

Our aim was for the new homes to feel as though they have always belonged.

Here’s an update on one of our projects involving the sensitive and sympathetic conversion of a former Victorian railway building into a stunning new dwelling. Once serving regular South West Railway services, the site and its buildings have remained derelict since the closure of the railway line in 1966.

The original structure is beautifully proportioned, featuring traditional face brickwork and an impressive king post truss rafter roof, providing a wonderful foundation for its next chapter.

Wind and water tight, brickwork complete, roof installed, and solar panels in place. Every stage brings this project one step closer to becoming a beautiful, energy efficient home.

As Chartered RIBA Architects, we have overseen the planning and building control process from the outset, ensuring the building's historic character is carefully preserved while creating a high quality contemporary home for modern living.

The RA Rowe team were delighted to experience this space exactly as it was intended at Jen and Robins lovely wedding. Seeing the barn filled with family, friends and celebration was a wonderful reminder of why we love designing spaces that bring people together.

Designed as a dedicated ceremony space for Glebe Barn Weddings in Bridgrule, this elegant oak framed barn combines natural materials, vaulted ceiling and soft natural light to create a special atmosphere. The exposed oak frame provides both structure and character creating a beautiful and contemporary wedding venue.

This bespoke staircase is now complete, it sits at the heart of this home creating a striking first impression, with generous proportions and carefully considered detailing this feature creates a sense of Georgian elegance.

It’s been a pleasure to work with our client Josh of J W Carpentry and Building to bring his vision to life.

We’re looking forward to revealing the rest of this incredible project once the external works are complete.

Originally constructed as part of the Yarner Trust’s sustainable building programme, this barn was built using structural straw bale walls, an innovative and environmentally conscious approach to construction.
The conversion includes a new roof supported by the existing straw bale structure, along with additional layers of wood fibre insulation to create an exceptionally energy-efficient and highly insulated home.
We've been involved in this unique project, set within a beautiful meadow in Devon, providing Building Regulations support and technical design, a fantastic example of how sustainable building techniques can create beautiful, comfortable living spaces.

Five years ago, we welcomed Anthony to R.A. Rowe.

As a Chartered RIBA Architect, Anthony has brought invaluable expertise across both residential and commercial projects, helping shape not only our designs but the direction of the business as a whole. His dedication to creating high quality architecture has been instrumental in our journey and we’re proud to be a RIBA registered practice as a result.

Alongside Anthony, our directors Darryn and Gareth play an equally important role in leading the practice. Darryn, now in his 16th year, has helped to build the strong foundations we stand on today. Gareth later joined the team, bringing valuable experience from his time at two Devon practices, adding fresh perspective and insight to the business.

Together, their varied strengths, experience, and shared vision continue to drive R.A. Rowe forward, creating a dynamic team that we’re incredibly proud of.
