Ideal Heating has launched a modification programme for a number of their boilers due to a risk of fire.

Ideal Heating will apply a safety upgrade to boilers manufactured between August 2022 and 7th January 2024 across the following ranges:

Independent Combi2
Keston Combi2
Keston System2

The product presents a risk of fire due to the dry operation, meaning the boiler lights gas but the heat generated does not cool it. There have been three incidents of boilers that have been able to continue to operate when the boiler heat exchanger has been full of air at a low pressure. This has allowed the heat exchanger and associated plastic components to be subject to significant heat allowing the plastic to flash to flame and result in fire outside of the appliance. There has also been a report of a customer having to extinguish flames.

Ideal has launched a modification programme to address the safety risk and has advised that customers can continue to use their boiler which should be repressurised to 1.5 bar. Not only is this rough it’s also dangerous! Left in this state by a gas registered engineer local to the area. Condensate pipe terminating in a tub in the cupboard this could allow the fumes from the boiler to enter the house! No Carbon monoxide detector in the room either. Sad when gas engineers think that’s the way to leave a customer. Customer had been left like this for over a year.

This boiler definitely needed a service, nearly burnt the case insulation. New electrodes and a full service, should be good for 12 months. I only went round to replace the kitchen sink and tap. Good job I checked the boiler over.
