A closer look at the banquette seating in this cottage kitchen and you’ll see just how closely it follows the old pebble wall.

The entire seat was scribed in to meet the existing wall, allowing the joinery to sit neatly against a surface that is anything but straight.

It’s precise work, but an important detail in an old building like this. Rather than trying to straighten out or cover up the quirks of the original architecture, the joinery is made to fit around them.

It’s the sort of detail that looks effortless once it’s finished – but only because it was anything but.

In a room of this scale, the kitchen needs to hold its own without competing with the architecture of the building.

Here, the design has been set out along a strong central axis. The island, sink, range and mantle align through the middle of the room, with the cabinetry balanced on either side.

That sense of order is particularly important in an open-plan barn, where the kitchen is viewed from the dining and living areas as well as from within the working space itself.

The generous proportions of this room allowed us to create a substantial run of tall cabinetry along one wall.

Bringing the fridge, ovens and larder cupboards together gives the kitchen a strong backbone, while the scale of the space ensures the cabinetry feels beautifully proportioned rather than imposing.

It also leaves the remaining walls lighter and more open, with uninterrupted worktops and plenty of natural light around the sink.

One of the details we are rather pernickety about is alignment.

In this kitchen, the Aga and mantle create a strong central focus, while the cabinetry, worktops and horizontal rails have all been carefully balanced around the timber frame.

It isn’t about making everything perfectly symmetrical. In a room with this much character and asymmetry, that would feel forced. It’s about knowing which lines should meet, which features should align and where to allow the architecture to lead.

These decisions may seem almost unnoticeable, but together they’re what make a kitchen feel calm, considered and completely at home in the room.

One of the biggest misconceptions about contemporary kitchens? That they feel cold.

We hear this surprisingly often.

Usually, what people are actually wary of isn't contemporary design – it's a kitchen that feels too stark, cold or clinical.

For us, a good contemporary kitchen is about proportion, balance and restraint. Clean lines and handleless cabinetry give you the simplicity, but what you pair them with completely changes how the room feels.

Handleless oak cabinetry can bring warmth. A stone with detail or texture rather than a completely uniform surface can soften the scheme. Even something as simple as changing the finish or introducing a contrasting material on an island can stop a very minimal kitchen feeling flat.

This project in Busbridge, Surrey perfectly demonstrates how contemporary kitchen design can sit beautifully within a period home. Our client wanted a kitchen that felt calm, uncluttered and practical, while creating a welcoming space for family life. With one daughter still living at home and another nearby with two young children, the kitchen needed to work just as well for everyday living as it did for hosting family gatherings.

The result is a beautifully understated space that feels effortlessly elegant. Finished in an anti-fingerprint matt Beton colour, the cabinetry has a soft, warm tone that gives the kitchen a modern aesthetic without appearing cold. To bring contrast and texture into the design, we paired it with oak-effect carcasses and a bespoke oak-effect dresser, creating the perfect balance between contemporary simplicity and natural character.

Meet Stephen.

Stephen is one of our kitchen designers and the man behind Charter Walk’s contemporary kitchens.

He loves the technical side of kitchen design just as much as the creative side - working out how a space can flow better, how every inch can be put to good use and how all those details come together to create a kitchen that looks beautiful and works brilliantly.

You’ll see that in some of his recent designs here. Clean lines, clever storage, carefully considered layouts and beautifully fitted handleless cabinetry are very much his thing.

This solid oak mantel was finished by scribing North Pound Cottage into the face of the timber before it was installed. Beautiful.
