🌳 Summer Branch Drop – A Seasonal Tree Hazard 🌳
One of our teams attended this mature oak whose limb had failed onto a neighbouring property causing some damage to an outbuilding.
But what is summer branch drop?
During periods of hot, dry weather, some mature trees can unexpectedly shed large branches without any obvious warning signs. This phenomenon, known as summer branch drop, is most commonly seen in species such as oak, beech, and horse chestnut.
In Norfolk, prolonged warm temperatures and dry conditions can increase the likelihood of summer branch drop, particularly in large, mature trees. While the exact cause is not fully understood, it is thought to be linked to heat stress, drought, and sudden changes in moisture levels within the tree.
If you’re enjoying Norfolk’s parks, woodlands, or green spaces this summer, it’s worth being aware of the potential risk.
Trees remain a vital part of our landscape and environment, but understanding seasonal hazards helps everyone enjoy them safely.
