Harleston Open Gardens weekend is happening this year on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th June. Harleston Allotments at the top of Mendham Lane will be open from 11am - 4pm serving light refreshments and with a plant stall on Saturday 14th June only. If you would like to look around the Allotments and talk to some of the Allotmenteers, the vintage bus which starts in Broad Street will be making the Allotments a regular stop on its circular tour of all the Harleston Open Gardens.
Hope to see you there.

About a month ago I started an experiment to try and grow Slips from shop bought Sweet Potatoes. The slips are the shoots which once cut from the main plant will produce roots when left in water for a few days or planted out in pots of compost. Once the roots system is well established you can either plant them out in large pots in full sun or wait until May/June to plant in main bed - again in a very sunny spot.
I planted the tubers in a clear plastic box in good potting compost around the end of February. They’ve been sitting in my spare bedroom which gets very warm when the sun is shining. It was suggested that they might take about 6 weeks to start forming roots and then shoots (slips) upwards. Apparently, the older tubers would shoot first. Being very impatient, I kept checking on them to see whether anything was happening. I noticed some roots from the largest of the ‘older’ tubers about 2/3 weeks’ ago and today that tuber is beginning to produce a shoot.
Utterly thrilled……
Will monitor its progress to see whether that ‘shoot’ develops into full blown leafy slips.

Saw my first very large Bumble Bee today who very kindly pollinated the Apricot tree in the Greenhouse. Usually I do it by hand three or four times, but maybe only twice this year.
Nectarine blossom now emerging.

So lovely to see the sun and forecast looking pretty good for the next week. Have the week off work so hopefully can spend time on the Allotment sorting out the myriad of tasks that still need doing.
But have finally finished sowing the early seeds indoors (a bit late) for tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, melons, aubergines. Fortunately I have very sunny windowsills - particularly in the spare bedroom which gets sun virtually all day. Temperatures there can easily get into the late 20’sC which we need to germinate some of the more Mediterranean-type crops. Have filled 48 cells. Hope they all germinate.
All the seed potatoes are chitting well so it’s nearly time to plant some of the First Earlies in the Greenhouse.
Everyone has their favourites I chose 3 varieties this year: Colleen Organic as I do think organic new potatoes taste better, Setanta which are often grown as a main crop but now are being offered as first early are renowned for their disease resistance and Red Duke of York which I’ve often grown as they seem very reliable as well as a good taste, although some people think they have rather thick skins.
Swimming this afternoon, but with the longer days can call in on the Allotment on the way back and start catching up. Roll on Spring….

As always it feels as though Winter has dribbled on for far too long. Last year was really wet, this year ridiculously cold, both options making any attempt to prepare for Spring nigh on impossible.
But there are signs of temperatures gradually rising over the next few weeks so I have a chance to catch up with all the outstanding tasks on the Allotment.
In the meantime I’ve sorted out existing seeds and ordered others. Some well-known growers are very expensive and don’t give you many seeds per pack. I’ve found others like Franchi have more unusual varieties and give you loads of seed per packet.
Some seeds need to be to planted early indoors: Tomatoes, Aubergines, Chilli Peppers, Melons and Cucumbers all have quite long growing cycles so need to be started now then moved to the Greenhouse, once Spring temperatures settle in. So have sorted out the seeds to be planted and just need to find some labelling sticks before I start the planting.
A couple of years’ ago I had really good year growing Sweet Potatoes, last year not so good and buying the ‘Slips’ for planting is expensive so am trying to grow some of my own. Sounds reasonably straightforward. You need a clear plastic box, good growing compost, water well and lay out the sweet potatoes pushing gently into compost, lid just laid on top and wait for them to sprout. We’ll see.

So lovely to finally be on the Allotment again for long sunny days. I always tell myself I shouldn’t be gardening for more than two hours at a time but don’t usually manage it and 4-5 hours at the moment seems to be the norm as I still try to catch up after our long wet Winter and late Spring.
Strimming the very thick, long grass has taken 9 battery charges’ worth of about 20 minutes each. The ground is so wet still and our early morning dew quite heavy in May so it’s tough going until mid-afternoon when it’s dried out a bit.
But finished it yesterday so today planted out more wigwams on the Pea and Bean bed of Mangetouts Sugarsnap peas and Climbing French Beans. At the end of the bed planted rows of Dwarf French Beans: Purple, Yellow and Green.
The potatoes are nearly all planted out now but so late although the First earlies I planted in pots in the Greenhouse a month ago are already putting on tall foliage so moved them outside. The Greenhouse on days like this can reach over 30C so really a bit too hot for them.
Re-potted Aubergines in the Greenhouse are growing well so will plant some outside in big pots soon as well as leaving others to grow on in the heat and protection of the Greenhouse.
I finally moved the Apricot and Peach trees out of the Greenhouse as hopefully now the risk of Leaf Curl has passed.
The sudden warm weather has encouraged Black aphids to invade some of the fruit trees. The Damson was covered. I threw soapy water over the lower branches but as the tree is so tall I couldn’t reach the top branches. The smaller dual Plum and Greengage tree is also infested so managed to treat that more easily. Doesn’t seem to have reached the next door Greengage tree nor the small Victoria Plum tree at the top of the plot. Still so much to do.
Now just a bit tired so am taking it easy…….

The Peonies are one of the first early Summer flowers to get going. From tiny red shoots in February, by the end of March/beginning of April they are over a foot tall. And that’s with the weather we’ve been having all Winter and into Spring. They are ridiculously large blousy flowers albeit with a short growing season but I think are a fitting border to the Rose bed with it’s tall climbing and rambling blooms.

The tree blossom around Sancroft Square is really lovely this year.
Finally took the cover off the Asparagus bed on the Allotment yesterday and not before time as at least five plants were beginning to produce spears. It’s always a gamble when to take it off: too early and the plants get frozen and too late and the spears start to grow sideways as not enough room under the cover to shoot up straight. Let’s hope we don’t get any more frosts.
Was going to try and Strim the paths later this week but more rain forecast. Loads more weeding and hedge trimming to do. Was hoping to get it finished this weekend as having cataract surgery next week and won’t be able to garden for 2 weeks after that.
But somehow it all gets done.
So looking forward to potting on Tomato seedlings, Squash and Brassicas. The new Pear tree has a lot of blossom and suddenly the Damson tree is in full bloom as well. The Allotment thinks Spring is here even if we may still doubt it…….

Had Pipin all day yesterday and as he’s so active was out for 7 of the 8 hours he was with me. Ended up on the Allotment. Suddenly noticed the Camelias are beginning to flower. The Greenhouse interior is looking a bit better since the clear up although the glass still needs cleaning.
The Asparagus is really starting to come into its own on the South West corner of the covered bed. But eventually had to tie up Pippin as he thought running round in circles across the Asparagus bed was a fun thing to do. You can see by the expression on his face what he thinks of that.
But he’d already had two long walks: on Bungay Common and Ladybelt Country Park. The latter was the first time we had visited and dogs have to be on the lead at this time of year, but a very peaceful quiet place although tiny car park so often full. Taking it easy today but expect Pippin is still raring to go: I’m not sure what would wear him out.
