Alliums in all their glory. I use them in small and large gardens. In gravel gardens and vegetable gardens. In herbaceous borders and meadows. They are amazing in flower but equally spectacular as seed heads. After a slow spring they bring welcome colour as the herbaceous border struggles to wake up.

Loving the foxglove spires in this border I planted at the end of 2021. It’s survived the drought and hard winter of 2022 and the slow spring of 2023. The border is designed using the combination of shape rather than just colour. Spikes of foxgloves, allium balls, pin cushion Astrantia Gill Richardson. Later will follow Echinops, salvia and the Achillea is just a week or two away from flowering.

I love Hostas. But in my garden and those I design and plant , I have to put them in pots to discourage the snails and slugs. Today I had the good fortune to go to Buckingham Palace when my daughter got her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. [picture snuck in]. Here they’re growing under the trees in central London - and not a snail or slug eaten leaf in sight. Amazing in volume but still great in pots where you can combine different varieties and colours.

The Rose Garden.

I was first approached to do a design for a rose garden in January 2021. Then it was a series of barns and cart lodges with a large muddy area in the middle. The design was finished in March and work began soon after to clear the area, improve the ground conditions and lay the paths. The roses were planted in April using both Peter Beales and David Austin roses. Last summer I went back to review progress. What a difference in just 12 months. The final photos were in late October 2022 when the perennials planted with the roses continued to provide plenty of interest. I’m looking forward to revisiting it in June 2023.

Transforming a small awkward plot into an easy to look after, butterfly and bee friendly habitat and very beautiful garden . The angular nature was transformed using strong curves. The gravel will create its own microclimate and the plants are chosen to withstand long periods without rain.

Even a simple veg garden for a first time gardener needs a plan setting out the layout and how to prep the beds
Raised beds made out of sleepers, filled with organic compost with a layer of newspaper.
This was then soaked, thanks to overnight rain, and then the seeds were planted through the paper and mulched with seed free hay. This is to help keep the moisture in the soil when the weather warms up
This is my first time with hay as I normally use bark fines.
No digging involved in the raised beds and heritage seeds used.

The design for this garden was done in 2017, it was built by Spruce Landscapes in 2018 and the photos taken 6 months after planting in June 2019. The Brief was to design a low maintenance garden that would provide safe and easy access from the house to the bottom of the garden. The existing sheds had to be kept and a couple of different seating areas created. Composite decking was used to match the windows of the house and the levels were managed using a retaining wall in oak sleepers and a series of wide and gentle steps in sleepers and gravel.

A new courtyard garden that makes the most of a small space to create an area that looks good both when you’re in it, looking at it from the ground floor living area and looking down from the first floor balcony.

I designed this garden a year ago and planted it up in September 2017. It's survived the Beast from the East and the summer drought and I went back last week to do the first prune and show my client how to look after the plants in the future.

This was originally a completely overgrown side garden The client cleared it and then asked me to come in and do a design for an out door kitchen area, lawn and traditional English flower garden. The path links the garden with the main garden at the back and the garden room and side access. The design was first done in April and the garden built and planted at the end of September when the weather is better for planting and laying turf.

This garden was dark and unappealing when I was first asked to produce a design for it. Now it feels brighter, more spacious and inviting. All the landscaping and border preparation was done by Spruce Landscapes of Poringland, perennial plants provided by Howard Nurseries of Wortham and shrubs by Homestead Nurseries in Kirstead Green. The compost and mulch was supplied by Kings Landscaping in Halesworth. The clients own builder built the wall by the shed and on the boundary.
