DEVON LIME

DEVON LIME Conservation building, lime plastering, lime rendering, pointing, plastering, lime washing and general building.

We are dedicated to returning older properties to their original condition. We aim to remove all materials which are detrimental to older properties. Modern cement renders trap moisture within old stone and cob walls. Damage occurs through moisture damage and frost damage. Cob walls lose their integrity and stonework softens or shatters. We will use modern materials on interior walls and ceilings.

We are experienced modern plasterers, as well as traditional lime plasterers. We are able to reproduce original features like covings and have experience of reinstating mouldings. We also work with venetian and tadelakt plasters which are highly polished, coloured plasters. Our main aim is to be sympathetic with the restoration and renovation that we carry out. We will always aim to ensure that any service that we provide enhances the physical durability and breathability of the building.

Today we revisit this medieval hall.
Not been here for a few months.
Lots of stone and cob repairs still to do but hopefully, with a good summer, we'll get most of it finished!

Apologies for the lack of posts but all the projects we've been working on have had many structural issues and haven't really been in a place to take photos.
One of them is this little cottage in Sidbury.
Another costly example of why concrete floors shouldn't be used in older properties.
The bases of all the ground floor walls are oak partitions with cob infill. They had all rotted out and upstairs was sagging into downstairs!
Floors were all dug out for a limecrete floor system.
Concrete foundations poured at base of walls and built up in brick to take new timber soul plates to support them, courtesy of Callum Vellacott and Ben Somers.
Breathable membranes and foam glass insulation installed to prevent capillary action and lime screeding was completed yesterday.
Now ready for rendering downstairs.
There will be more photos to come!

Medieval property with Elizabethan extensions and alterations and subsequent more recent ones.
We have a few repairs to complete before getting some basecoats on and drying before it gets too cold.
We will move inside over autumn and winter months.

A few photos of this large, extended long house.
We started this one around this time last year, left it scratch coated over the winter and finished it off this summer.
Double devon longhouse with extension. Many different rebuilds and repairs over the years.
Lots of cob repairs and extra coats.
Now, decorating nearly complete by Aphra Beart-Albrecht and Paolo, it's looking like this.

Just finished, for now, with this beautiful old house on the edge of Dartmoor.
Kitchen, stairwell and corridor; altered, repaired and rendered with lime putty mortars.
A truly beautiful property, steeped in history and being restored sympathetically, an area at a time.
