The Asia premiere of Crooked Lines of Beauty: My grandfather the Architect Carl Nyren, a documentary on renowned architect Carl Nyrén, featuring the villa and mountain house Nyrén designed for his family, with revisits to the laboratories, office blocks, churches, and schools he created during his half-century-long career.

We also revisited Lewerentz: Divine Darkness, screening the film for the second time at the gallery - another opportunity to explore the work and ideas of one of Sweden’s most influential architects.

Lewerentz Divine Darkness-  a repeat screening, in case you missed it at the InCITE gallery last year.
(Swedish & English with English Subtitles | 2024 | 70 mins)

Sigurd Lewerentz (1885–1975) is internationally renowned as one of Sweden’s greatest architects, but due to his aversion to being interviewed and recorded, he has long been shrouded in mystery. Recently, however, a treasure trove of film and sound recordings of the ageing Lewerentz was found in a cellar in Lund, and it’s these recordings that form the basis of this captivating documentary. Lewerentz Divine Darkness is a unique portrait of this enigmatic figure of 20th century architecture, whose work still resonates and inspires today.

Le Corbusier famously praised Västerortskyrkan in Vällingby (Stockholm) after visiting it in 1958, saying: “If you are going to see beautiful churches in Europe, there are three you should not miss: St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Notre Dame in Paris, and Västerort Church in Vällingby.”

Västerortskyrkan (Västerort Church) in Vällingby, Stockholm was designed by architects Carl Nyrén and Bertil Engstrand, and inaugurated in 1956. Le Corbusier himself admired the building during his 1958 visit, praising it alongside St. Peter’s Basilica and Notre Dame as one of Europe’s most beautiful churches.
