ewo empowering wellbeing outdoors. We master lighting systems since 1996. Light is used exactly where it is needed.

ewo's mission goes far beyond offering maximum functionality and modularity, outstanding quality and design. “empowering wellbeing outdoors” means focusing on the community-forming and evocative aspects of light. Based on this central idea, ewo has become one of the leading innovators in the industry with cutting-edge and customized solutions that superbly combine three principles:

MASTERING

THE SHAPE OF LIGHT: The shape of light and its atmospheric effect in public spaces is individually designed through the modular use of optics developed in-house. MASTERING THE BODY OF LIGHT: High-precision craftsmanship, durability, and efficiency characterize ewo luminaires. ewoIndividual allows for the creation of systems beyond the standard portfolio to fulfill individual requirements in terms of shape, color, and surface. MASTERING THE INTELLIGENCE OF LIGHT: The ewo-owned brand connexx enables intelligent lighting control. By developing hardware and software for luminaire control, connexx offers a wealth of holistic, sustainable solutions. Industries and areas such as architecture and arts, public space, roads and traffic, airports and logistics and sports benefit from using ewo products and solutions. From the company headquarters in Cortaccia in South Tyrol, Italy, and its branches in Germany, Austria, France, and the USA, ewo carries its lighting philosophy into the world with over 130 employees. “empowering wellbeing outdoors”—since 1996.

🔆 Light only where it is needed.

In many public spaces, lighting stays on all night. Main-Light takes a different approach.

The connex-x lighting controls respond to actual presence and use infrared sensors to distinguish between animals and people. Reduced blue light and full cut-off optics help minimise impact on insects and the night sky.

Main-Light is installed at Weseler Werft in Frankfurt from May to October 2026 as part of World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026.

🔋 Efficiency begins with control.

In Ardez, precise optics were only part of the solution. Smart control was just as essential.

Motion sensors adjust light levels based on presence. During the late evening, output is reduced in stages. Outside the village centre, lighting activates only when movement is detected.

Compared with the previous installation, the concept delivers at least 75% energy savings.

A strong example of how adaptive lighting can reduce waste, lower operating demands, and maintain quality where it matters.

🏛️ Historic environments demand more than standard lighting.

Ardez is a protected 17th-century village with narrow lanes, listed buildings, varying mounting heights, and no dedicated grid infrastructure for public lighting.

To meet these conditions, ewo developed CLER: a custom luminaire created within the ewoIndividual programme.
Three mounting variants, catenary suspension, wall brackets, and post-top mounts, adapt to different site requirements while maintaining a consistent visual language throughout the village.

A clear example of how technical flexibility can preserve architectural continuity in historic settings

✨ Two inspiring days at darc sessions Europe in Sicily.

A chance to connect with the lighting community, share ideas, and enjoy valuable conversations around the future of light in outdoor spaces.

Our colleagues Frank Vollmer and Manuel Toni Streiter shared ewo’s approach and latest solutions throughout the event.

Looking forward to more inspiring conversations ahead. 🙌

Efficient lighting that respects its surroundings

For the Minster St. Johannes in Dingolfing, the new lighting concept delivers more than visual precision.

By illuminating only what is needed, the system reduces total connected load from 2,000 W to just 510 W, saving approximately 75% energy.

No light extends beyond the tower or into the night sky, keeping the illumination focused and respectful of both the architecture and its surroundings.

🔆 Solar-powered lighting for spaces beyond conventional infrastructure.

Many paths, public squares, and cycling routes remain inadequately lit because conventional lighting often requires complex installation and cable infrastructure. Main-Light responds with a self-sufficient, solar-powered system that operates without power lines and provides low-pollution, insect-friendly illumination.

Developed by Trübenbacher and Lang for Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026, the project combines renewable energy with sensor-controlled public lighting.

Congratulations to Tobias Trübenbacher and Andreas Lang on the opening of the Main-Light pilot installation at Weseler Werft in Frankfurt.

ewo supported the project with Chameleon projectors and connex-x lighting controls.

🌌 What if better public lighting meant less light?

In Ardez, within the municipality of Scuol, public lighting was redesigned around a clear principle: light only where it is needed.

The previous sodium vapour installation brightened streets, facades and surrounding areas. The new concept reduces spill light while improving illumination on paths and lanes.

Located near the Swiss National Park, the project shows how municipalities can improve pedestrian orientation while protecting one of Central Europe’s rare remaining natural night skies

Responsible light for sensitive landscapes.

🎯 When precision brings architecture to life

For the Minster St. Johannes in Dingolfing, the aim was clear: make the tower visible at night without spilling light beyond its outline.

Using our projection technology with custom-made GOBOs, we developed a lighting concept that follows the tower’s geometry with exceptional precision. The result is sharp, glare-free illumination that makes the tower appear to glow from within.

🌌 Last week was International DarkSky Week, a reminder of how important responsible lighting is in large outdoor spaces.

In the project at Zurich Airport, ewo’s R–System product delivers precise light distribution and high visual comfort. DarkSky Approved certified, it supports safety while respecting the night environment.

A practical example of how performance and responsibility can go hand in hand.
