Set within the lush hills of Ella, Murunga Café at Wild Bee Hostel is conceived as a serene architectural retreat that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. Framed by panoramic mountain views at the front and a dense tropical forest at the rear, the design celebrates a seamless dialogue between built form and landscape.
Rooted in a tropical-rustic language, the café combines raw textures and natural materials—exposed steel, woven rattan, warm timber, and earthy masonry—to create a tactile and inviting atmosphere. The semi-open pavilion allows light, air, and views to flow freely, reinforcing a strong connection to nature.
At the entrance, a vibrant mural transforms the façade into a storytelling element, establishing a memorable identity while welcoming visitors into a layered spatial experience. As the day transitions into evening, warm ambient lighting and delicate hanging fixtures redefine the space into a relaxed and intimate setting

Framed by the lush tea estates of Ella, “TE DALU” Resort & Spa emerges as a boutique sanctuary inspired by the life cycle of the tea leaf itself. The architectural language draws from the evolving hues of tea — from vibrant fresh green to warm earthy browns during the drying process. The façade and interior palette subtly reflect these tonal transitions, allowing the building to harmoniously blend with the surrounding plantations in both their green and dry seasons.

The project comprises 18 luxury rooms, each carefully oriented to capture uninterrupted panoramic views of the valley. Generous openings and private balconies dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape, inviting mist, mountain breeze, and natural light into every space. The restaurant and infinity pool are positioned as experiential focal points, overlooking the rolling hills and tea canopy. Dining here becomes more than a meal — it is an immersion into Ella’s landscape.

A defining architectural feature is the tea-leaf-inspired ceiling at the lobby and restaurant. Designed using cane materials with sculpted timber framing, the ceiling becomes an abstract interpretation of scattered tea leaves — organic, rhythmic, and contextually expressive. Lobby corridors and entrance facades are articulated with layered cane panels, filtering light and creating a textured play of shadow while reinforcing the resort’s identity. The materiality remains honest and tropical — timber, cane, concrete, and earthy tones — carefully balanced to achieve warmth, elegance, and sustainability.

Set beside the Polwatta River in Weligama. “Cascara” Boutique & Wellness Resort is a carefully crafted sanctuary where architecture flows seamlessly with nature.
Surrounded by lush greenery, the 15-room boutique retreat is designed as a series of open, breathable spaces that dissolve the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Timber roof structures, warm textured walls, soft lighting, and natural stone floors create a calm tropical atmosphere rooted in simplicity and elegance.

The restaurant pavilion opens toward the pool and garden, inviting natural ventilation, filtered daylight, and a gentle connection to the landscape. Private courtyards and plunge pools offer intimate moments of relaxation, while shaded walkways guide guests through a rhythmic journey of light, shadow, and greenery.

“Cascara” — inspired by the idea of a protective shell shaped by nature — becomes an architectural expression of flow of wind, light, water & experience.

Stay Ceylon in Weligama has been completely reimagined — transforming an aging, closed-off building into a fresh, contemporary 15-room boutique retreat that reflects the soul of Sri Lanka’s surf and beach culture.
The new façade opens generously to the ocean and the Galle Road, with pastel coastal tones, warm lighting, crafted timber details, and layered balconies that give the hotel a vibrant, welcoming presence day and night.
Inside, every space has been thoughtfully redesigned with calming colours, natural textures, and handcrafted local materials. Sea-facing rooms now flow into spacious balconies, offering uninterrupted views of Weligama Bay. Soft sage walls, rattan lighting, timber furniture and minimalist layouts create a peaceful, airy atmosphere ideal for relaxation.
The café , bar and dining spaces introduce a lively coastal personality with a geometric feature ceiling, cane-and-timber accents, and wide-open windows that invite the tropical breeze in.
Stay Ceylon is now a modern coastal landmark — celebrating local craftsmanship, sustainable tropical design, and the easygoing rhythm of the surfing lifestyle. A complete transformation that brings new life, warmth, and identity to the heart of Weligama Bay.

As part of the ARCASIA Committee for Young Architects (ACYA) Country Report 2025, the SLIA representative, Sarala Perera, together with the SLIA observer, Shahdia Jamaldeen, proudly presented our project, which embodies inclusivity and diversity in both design and ex*****on.

At its heart, the project was about creating a space of hope and comfort for children battling cancer—a place where emotional well-being is nurtured alongside physical healing. This vision was brought to life through close collaboration with a diverse group of individuals, whose contributions were vital to its success.

We are humbled that our work was selected as one of only three projects to represent the creativity and dedication of young architects in Sri Lanka. It is also our privilege to extend heartfelt appreciation to the two other architects whose inspiring projects were presented alongside ours, reflecting the breadth of scales and approaches shaping Sri Lanka’s architectural landscape today.

The presentations took place on 8th September 2025 at Songdo Convensia, Incheon, South Korea, during the 21st Asian Congress of Architects (ACA21).

It is truly an honour to have had our project showcased on this international platform—especially as it was a labour of love, driven by passion and a commitment to meaningful design.
