It’s poppy season! 💓
The poppies are in full bloom here in the Netherlands, and you can spot them everywhere! Along cycle paths, tucked beside old walls, and brightening up roadsides and fields. They really are impossible to miss at this time of year!

Do you want more poppies next year?
- Tip 1: Plant them somewhere they can stay long-term. Many annual poppies will happily self-seed and return on their own.

- Tip 2: Deadheading keeps your garden tidy and prevents spreading but if you want more poppies next year, leave some flowers to form seed heads.

- Tip 3: Wait for the seed heads to be completely dry. Clip the seed heads and collect the seeds. Or simply shake the seed heads to get the seeds. But keep in mind, if you leave the head the seeds will naturally drop and reseed the area on their own.

- Tip 4: Before planting (autumn or early spring), place the seeds in the fridge for a few weeks to help them sprout.

June is peak bloom for roses… but it’s also peak season for problems. 🌹

But why do roses get diseases more easily?
➡️ Roses need rich, well-drained soil and good airflow. If conditions are too wet or crowded, moisture builds up and fungal diseases can develop.
➡️ Stress also weakens roses, making them more vulnerable to pests and disease. Healthy plants usually have glossy leaves and strong, vigorous growth.

So where do you start?
Many rose ‘problems’ come from poor growing conditions. Focus on:
• Plenty of sunlight
• An airy, open position
• Regular but not excessive watering
• Feeding during the growing season

The Martagon Lily is hardy, reliable and perfect for naturalising. Once established, it returns year after year, producing more blooms with every season. 🧡

➡️ Step 1: Planting
Plant bulbs in a well-drained, evenly moist position. Place at a depth of approx. 3 times the bulb height. Ideal for sheltered spots away from excessive wind, heat and drought.

➡️ Step 2: Watering
Water well after planting and maintain consistent moisture during active growth until late autumn to support strong root development.

➡️ Step 3: Flowering period
Flowers appear in June – July, reaching 80 – 100 cm in height. Remove spent blooms during flowering to encourage plant energy back into the bulb.

➡️ Step 4: Feeding
Apply a balanced fertiliser immediately after flowering to support bulb strength and next season’s performance.

➡️ Step 5: After flowering care
Allow stems and foliage to die back naturally. Do not cut too early, as this process feeds the bulb for the following year.

➡️ Step 6: Seasonal protection
The Martagon lily is very hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -25°C. In cold winters, mulch can be added for protection, while in extreme heat (up to 38°C) light shade and extra watering are beneficial.

➡️ Step 7: Pruning
Remove only dead or yellowing stems in late season to maintain plant health.
