921 new homes in Amsterdam! 🏘️🌳 Our masterplan Westerpark West transformed an isolated site with office buildings into a neighbourhood of 15 architecturally diverse apartment buildings with lush greenery.

Our design has split the former office site into five plots, each with its own charismatic design motif, arranged in a 'Strip' along Haarlemmerweg – a western access route to the city centre. There is a wide variety of apartment sizes and typologies, from gallery apartments to spacious corner apartments to apartments with sizeable bay windows.

🎨 The architectural diversity is further enhanced by an abundance of greenery and its waterfront location, with green public squares, plazas, and courtyard gardens – each with a distinct character varying from plot to plot. The homes also feature diverse outdoor spaces, from front gardens to loggias and balconies.

Along the waterfront runs the Brettenpad, a well-known cycling and walking route that passes through the masterplan. The green, largely car-free public spaces, together with food venues, provide places for residents and passers-by to walk, relax, and meet. 🌿🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️ "The masterplan shows how urban densification and increased liveability can go hand in hand – providing over 900 new homes with immediate access to green and pleasant outdoor spaces," says our founding partner Nathalie de Vries.

🏗️ Construction of Waterpark West began in 2019, with plots being built in order from east to west. Within the masterplan, we also designed the building Blend – with expressive bay windows that create extra living space and enhanced views – and Salt, with a dramatic 10-metre cantilever.

Completed this year is our Kruidentuin project – the largest project of 267 corner apartments within the masterplan, which consists of a colourful family of seven buildings, each with its own distinct character, expressed through variations in brickwork, window frames, masonry patterns, and staggered balconies.

🏗️🚧🏙️ Construction update! Construction progress continues on The Modernist, located opposite Rotterdam's Central Station.

This 60,000-square-metre complex has a total of 421 apartments, 12,750 square metres of offices, and a plinth with commercial spaces. It will form a recognisable entrance to the city from the station with its inviting street-level public functions and add more life to the area with its residential towers above.

The building's plinth levels have been completed, and work on the façade will start in the coming weeks. After that, it's time for the towers to start taking shape next year!

The Modernist increases the number of residents in this part of town, in an area mostly comprising office buildings. The apartments in the two residential towers vary from 45 to 120 square metres, with a mixture of homes for sale and for rent, including below-market rates for middle-income residents.

The ground and first floor of the plinth will house restaurants, a café, co-working spaces, offices, and a fitness studio. Multiple entrances help to connect all spaces to the street level, creating a lively ground floor, also outside office hours. A striking aspect of the design are the "sun cuts" – recesses in the towers that allow extra sunlight at street level on the Kruisplein.

A vertical village is being constructed in Shenzhen… 🏘️⬆️🏗️ The structure is coming together of the Bihailou Art Village – a mixed-use cultural and commercial centre.

The design comprises a multicoloured stack of irregular "houses". This approach allows every part of the programme, from a theatre and museum to shops and restaurants, to occupy a space perfectly suited to the requirements.

With each "house" having an individual entrance, the different functions can set their opening hours independently. This leaves the circulation weaving up through the heart of the stack as a permanently accessible part of the public space.

Visitors will be able to climb the stairs, escalators, ramps, and gangways at any time of day, glimpsing the surroundings through gaps between the boxes, until they reach a roof terrace with views of the mountains, the cityscape, and the bay. 🏞️🌆🌅

An iconic modernist house becoming a museum – but its accessibility, once restricted to a single family, must now be considered for everyone.

The Villa Müller in Prague, designed by Adolf Loos, recently opened its doors after being closed for more than a year and a half due to reconstruction. Now a museum, the villa is open for tours, with new routes showcasing rooms that were previously off-limits to visitors.

During the opening at the end of September, The Why Factory, together with the Muzeum Prahy and architecture students of the České vysoké učení technické v Praze, presented a new research publication, exploring the question of accessibility of the villa.

The book "(T)Raumplan: How to All Access the Villa Müller" investigates how the villa's complex spatial organisation can be made more accessible while preserving the qualities that make it one of Loos's most important works.

The villa is a challenging prototype with interconnected rooms arranged across different levels, according to Loos's Raumplan. This three-dimensional sequence of spaces presents barriers to physical access. (T)Raumplan asks how adapting, shaping, and questioning the existing architecture could generate new possibilities.

The book presents 23 speculative interventions, ranging from elevators, ramps, and moving platforms to more radical proposals involving kinetic architecture, robots, drones, and virtual reality. The proposals are deliberately broad, testing the limits of what might be possible rather than offering a single solution.

The title (T)Raumplan combines Raumplan with traum, the German word for dream. It reflects the project's ambition to imagine how Loos's revolutionary spatial concept might be adapted for the centuries to come, while retaining the complexity that makes it unique.

The publication will soon be available via the Museum of Prague's e-shop. Read more here! https://mvrdv.com/news/4915/traumplan-publication-of-the-why-factory-investigates-accessibility-of-villa-muller-in-prague

📚 A new Central Library for Essen! With its relocation to a more central spot in the city, we designed the interior of the new Zentralbibliothek, which will function as a cultural hub and "third place" for Esseners.

Designing with includi by aatvos and Meyer Architekten GmbH, we started by investigating the role of libraries over the centuries – from closed-off monuments to repositories of information for a broad audience. Our concept reflects the current transition of libraries into spaces of interaction and learning, using sociologist Ray Oldenburg's theory of the "third place": a place in everyday life alongside home and work or school that is welcoming, social, and cultural. 🛋️🎨

The interior concept is built around two ideas: making the collection easy to navigate and revealing the people and activities inside to the city. The bookshelf itself is a defining element of the design, with clusters of shelves with distinct identities and purposes for playing, gaming, learning, and hobbies. Vibrant colours are used in high-energy, communal spaces while a calmer palette denotes places for individual and completive activities.

The new Zentralbibliothek is located in a former department store. The façade is activated with a continuous ribbon of study spaces, hangout zones, play areas, viewing spots, and plants. Visible from the outside, these spaces connect the everyday activities of library users with the city, inviting people to read, work, socialise, or relax. Inside, a ground-floor café invites people in, while a central atrium, orientation points, and wayfinding system make the building easy to navigate.

Across the floors, visitors can explore a wide range of media and literature, alongside makerspaces, rehearsal rooms, equipment such as 3D printers, VR technology and robotics, and spaces for focused studying and collaborative workshops. On the top floor, the "Stadt Raum" provides a venue for events with panoramic views across the city.

🏙️ The library opens its doors to the public on October 24. Read more on the design here! https://www.mvrdv.com/news/4913/the-library-as-a-%E2%80%9Cthird-place%E2%80%9D-essen-central-library-becomes-a-cultural-hub-with-an-interior-designed-by-mvrdv-and-includi

Built by women – in Amsterdam! Last week, the exhibition "Gebouwen door Vrouwen in het Oostelijk Havengebied" was opened at the Borneo Architectuur Centrum Amsterdam, exploring projects by female designers in the city's eastern docklands.

We are featured with our designs for the Lloyd Hotel and Borneo-12. The Lloyd Hotel project transformed a 1920s former emigrant hotel and prison into a 120-room hotel and cultural hub, with a new communal void carved through its historic interior. Borneo-12 is an experimental private house on an exceptionally narrow plot, using just half of its five-metre width to create a 2.5-metre-wide home alongside a private alley.

The exhibition presents an inventory of projects designed by women, ranging from buildings to the design of public spaces. The projects are showcased through design sketches, construction drawings, visualisations, models, and photographs.

The exhibition was created by the platform Gebouwen door Vrouwen that celebrates the work of female designers shaping the built environment. On display until 16 December, find more info here! https://architectenweb.nl/agenda/event.aspx?id=41984

🛋️ 🏙️ A living room of the city! We have designed the Barcode Collection, a new range of modular urban furniture, for Escofet 1886.

The collection has three basic building blocks – the Tribune, the Dune, and the Desk – which are designed to fit together into continuous landscapes. Anything can be created, from long "barcodes" or small "islands".

The design process began by thinking on the scale of urban space, instead of single product design. We imagined how more archetypical shapes could be utilised to playfully reimagine the urban landscape – envisioning a space for people to interact and creatively occupy their cities.

The Tribune is a set of broad steps for people to climb, sit and observe, while the Dune offers a smooth slope, perfect for reclining. The Desk includes a bench and table for people to eat, work, or simply chat with others.

🧩 The three elements have the same width and height, allowing them to be placed back-to-back to form a continuous surface – a "barcode". Elements can be placed side-by-side for double-width barcodes, two-by-two islands, or any creative configuration that can be imagined.

🌳 Each of the elements comes in a number of variations, making the collection even more versatile. Tree planters can be incorporated into the Tribune and Dune. The placement of the slope on the Dune can vary to enable side-by-side placement. The Desk is made up of separate parts, with the bench and table available separately. The elements are available in eight different colours of concrete, resulting in a total of 72 different elements to choose from.

The Urban Revivo flagship store in Beijing has been shortlisted in the Single-Brand Store category in this year's FRAME awards! 🤩

Located in the Sanlitun shopping district, the store's design reflects both the cosmopolitan outlook of fashion brand Urban Revivo and a connection to the local architectural character of China's capital.

The store's striking aesthetic begins with its façade. This is formed by suspended aluminium tiles and tubes, subtly branded with Urban Revivo's initials and finished in a "dichroic" coating that changes colour depending on the viewing angle, from purple to Urban Revivo's signature blue.

Throughout the store, familiar elements of Beijing's architecture are reinterpreted in a contemporary way. The entrance and display windows echo the form of traditional Chinese moon gates, while the grey brick interior recalls the city's historic hutongs.

Inside, the experience unfolds as a journey from traditional to contemporary. As visitors move upwards through the building, the characteristic archways evolve from the rounded moon gate to a modern inverted curve. Materials and accent colours follow the same progression, transitioning from lively, expressive interiors on the lower levels to darker, more refined spaces above.

Six immersive "Bold Rooms" showcase special collections, each with their own character. Highlights include the "playful room" with recycled fabric blocks and the "soft room", whose walls are entirely covered in cushions. ☁️
