SHUG LIFE is a humble gangster Bach. She sits on a small site deep in the mount. ata got resource consent as we are maximising this valuable site. The curve of the original dwelling inspired the design which gives the strong structure elegance.

Shug Life is a Bach but not the sort you’re used to.

CORO GOLD /

Our clients owned their (camp) site for years but grew to need a more permanent holiday home. Inspired by the classic NZ bach aesthetic, this project perfectly blends relaxation and immersion in a lifestyle. CORO GOLD is the perfect example of how modern prefabrication techniques can be used to create a beautiful and functional home that is both fast and efficient to build.

Pauanui Vice sits on a wide elbow site at the extreme edge of Pauanui waterways in the Coromandel. Clients wanted a refined executive residence that could function like a Bach. The low slung modernist structure was born.

ata Welcomes Architect James Sievers

Being fresh off the boat in Tauranga, I’ve been seeing the local architectural vernacular with fresh eyes. At first glance it’s a real smorgasbord, but I am enjoying distilling some of the overarching themes and discussing with the ATA team.

I keep coming back to classical architecture as my biggest influence — proportion, composition, form, and order. These principles hold true at any scale, whether I’m designing a façade, or a custom-made door handle. I’ve always loved making things by hand. There’s something deeply satisfying about creating something that didn’t exist before. For a while, leather was the material I focussed on making — belts, bags, glasses cases, dog collars, and an endless quest to make the perfect wallet. I'd love to get into making shoes one day.

Originally from Whanganui, I’ve spent the past few years in West Auckland, with Tauranga always a holiday destination growing up. Now that I’m here full-time, it feels a little like I’m living in permanent holiday mode. Hoping it lasts!

I’m energised by the ata design process - the way each project begins with curiosity, collaboration, and a deep dive into the client’s brief and site. It’s not just about producing beautiful concepts; it’s about crafting solutions that respond to context, climate, and the way people want to live.
