Dave is a Nelson boy, born and bred and has been plastering, painting and decorating in the region for around 30 years. He will rip your walls apart, re-line them, plaster them and decorate them the way you like. He will strip the lead base paint off your hundred-year-old house, replace the rotten weatherboards and finish it with a great paint job. He will most likely have a solution to any little

or large problem that may crop up and be able to deal with it. What he won’t do however is cut corners or do a half pie job. He will give you all the advice you need and let you know what is happening throughout the project. He will use the best materials suitable for the job and try and save you money wherever possible. He will always try to keep the workplace as tidy as possible. Dave likes to work largely by himself but will bring people in when necessary. The projects may take longer in terms of days but in terms of hours worked most likely less. Dave likes to think he is efficient, professional, reliable and congenial. Although Dave probably has a preference for restoration and renovation work, he is just as happy doing new work.

When people talk about restoration we can be talking about any number of different things. Restoring an old masterpiece requires precise skill, expertise knowledge, the right tools and a considerable amount of patience to make the painting look as it was when first created.

Restoring an old building or Villa is different however as generally people want to make them better-to modernise them with electricity, plumbing, insulation etc so effectively they are doing a renovation. Keeping the integrity of a building when restoring it through renovation is a tricky business. What happens more often than not is that people are using modern materials and techniques to upgrade these places. It’s important to keep the decoration as sympathetic as possible to the essence of the architecture.

So, do not just rush in with great vigour and transform- take the slow road and recreate. Don’t turn an apple into an orange.

I have been lucky over the years to have been involved in working on some very old and beautiful buildings in Nelson and have a real passion for restoring these homes back to their former selves.
