Started releasing green lacewing eggs onto my dahlias! These tiny eggs hatch into larvae that are absolute predators — they go after aphids, mites, thrips, and other pests that love to wreck dahlia foliage. It’s a more natural way to keep the bad bugs in check without spraying anything. Excited to see how the plants do once the lacewings get to work. 🌿

Making comfrey compost tea today🌿

Comfrey leaves are a great thing you can add to your garden — they’re packed with potassium, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. By soaking them in water and letting them ferment, you end up with an incredibly rich liquid fertilizer you can dilute and feed directly to your plants.
All it takes is fresh comfrey leaves, a tub of water, and a little patience. ( I also added a scoop of rabbit compost for an extra punch😅) Just a warning it does get smelly!
Have you ever made comfrey tea or any other homemade fertilizers? I’d love to learn different methods.

Last night after a gorgeous rain I went to check on the dahlias- and sure enough , I found a bunch of slugs had moved in and were happily munching away. Dahlias are basically a five star restaurant for slugs, and a good rain is their invitation to dinner.

Time to bring out the Sluggo plus! I scatter granules around every plant. It’s made from naturally occurring ingredients, certified organic and safe around people and pets. It lures slugs out and stops them without any harsh chemicals.

Just effective, targeted protection for the dahlias so they can keep doing what they do best.🌸

I enjoy getting outside in the cool of the evening to do weeding. So satisfying to hear the birds twitter, watch the sun go down and feel the world slow down for the evening. It’s actually a very peaceful task for me. Except for the mosquitoes 🥴 I need my purple Martin flock to settle in and get to work!

May 22 we got hit with a hard frost that I was not expecting 😭 I know, I know… living in Northern NY the weather is unpredictable and I’m always trying to get things planted out as early as possible since our season is so short to start with.
I keep my eyes glued on the weather and last night the forecast said 40, I should have checked closer, but I was oh so tired from days of planting then got distracted by hosting an impromptu birthday party and went to bed forgetting to Check again.
What a gut punch to see the frost this morning. I put on my boots and rushed out to the gardens where my fears were confirmed, my 400 dahlias that I had babied for months to get started early are toast😭 I had all the provisions like hoops & frost cloth and COULD HAVE protected everything had I just remembered & not been so tired🙈

New shoots will eventually grow on the dahlias again, and I can reseed the other annuals. And in a couple days, hopefully my heart will sprout some fresh courage to keep pushing towards this dream, no matter how many times I get knocked down.
