Some buildings are worth preserving not just for what they are, but for what they represent.

Set along the banks of the Roaring Fork River, Basalt Riverfront Studio carries forward a new chapter in the story of downtown Basalt, Colorado—one rooted in adaptive reuse, community connection, and thoughtful commercial architecture.

Rather than replacing the existing structure, our team embraced the opportunity to restore and reimagine it with intention. What once stood quietly along the riverfront has been transformed into a contemporary workplace environment designed to inspire creativity, collaboration, and future growth within the community it serves.

The design honors the character of the original building while introducing a renewed sense of openness, light, and connection to the surrounding landscape. Framed river views, natural materials, and refined spatial flow create an experience that feels both grounded in place and forward-looking in purpose.

Projects like Basalt Riverfront Studio remind us that meaningful architecture is not only about creating something new—it is about recognizing the value already embedded within a place and shaping it for generations to come.

As Basalt continues to evolve, we are proud to contribute to a project that reflects the spirit of the Roaring Fork Valley while creating space for new ideas, businesses, and community experiences to thrive.

Some homes are rebuilt. Others are rediscovered.

Renewal began with a simple intention: to honor the life already lived within these walls while creating space for what comes next. Through a thoughtful residential renovation, this home was transformed into a quieter, more connected expression of mountain living — one that feels deeply rooted in both landscape and family legacy.

Natural light moves gently through the interiors. Materials were chosen for their warmth, texture, and timelessness. Every line, opening, and detail was designed to strengthen the relationship between the home and its surroundings, allowing the experience of living here to feel both grounding and effortless.

More than a renovation, Renewal is about continuity — preserving the spirit of a place while reshaping it for new memories, new rituals, and generations to come.

Since 1888, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort has stood as one of Colorado’s most iconic destinations — a place where history, wellness, hospitality, and architecture converge in the heart of Glenwood Springs. We’re honored to have played a lasting role in shaping its evolution.

In 1986, Z Group Architecture & Interior Design (then Caudill Gustafson & Associates Architects, P.C.) designed the “new” Lodge — originally a 110-room hotel spanning approximately 74,000 square feet and, at the time, the largest geothermally heated building in Colorado. Inspired by the surrounding landscape and the resort's enduring legacy, the Lodge was envisioned as a contemporary extension of a place deeply rooted in Colorado history.

As the resort continued to grow, our relationship with the property evolved through several transformational phases. One of the most meaningful was the complete restoration, renovation, and adaptive re-use of the historic Stone Bathhouse — originally opened in 1888 — preserving one of Glenwood Springs’ most treasured architectural landmarks while breathing new life into the guest experience.

Later phases included a significant addition and renovation to the broader resort complex, including the creation of a 950-person health club and a comprehensive facelift of the property overlooking I-70.

Today, the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort continues to welcome generations of visitors from around the world — a testament to thoughtful evolution, enduring design, and the power of places that become part of people’s stories.

💡Fun Fact: Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is home to the world’s largest hot springs pool — stretching over two city blocks and fed by the Yampah Spring, which produces more than 3.5 million gallons of mineral-rich water daily.

As we look back on this milestone anniversary, we are grateful to have contributed to a project whose legacy continues to evolve while remaining deeply connected to the history and spirit of Glenwood Springs.

Ikagai is not just a calm aesthetic — it’s a philosophy woven into every material, texture, and moment of experience.

Interior designer Andrea Glinn approached the home with intentional restraint, layering wire-brushed woods, tumbled stone, soft blues, and muted grays to create spaces that feel deeply restorative and connected to the surrounding landscape.

“I dug into what would feel light, calm and contemplative; there’s nothing overstimulating here,” Glinn shares.

That sense of quiet luxury extends beyond the palette. Carefully curated furnishings, multicultural contemporary artwork, and thoughtfully chosen antiques create interiors that feel collected over time — warm, soulful, and deeply personal.

Designed as both sanctuary and gathering place, the residence reflects the homeowner’s own definition of ikigai: a home that welcomes connection, joy, and the people who matter most.

“This is my happy place, and the vibe is peaceful and fun; it feels alive, warm and active here.”

Through intentional simplicity and timeless materiality, this home becomes a study in balance — where architecture, interiors, and nature exist in harmony.

The most meaningful architecture begins with understanding the land itself — the way light moves across a site, how views unfold, and how the landscape naturally wants to be experienced.

At Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, we believe great design does not compete with nature — it responds to it. From materiality to placement, every decision is guided by a desire to create harmony between architecture and the surrounding environment.

Our latest blog explores the philosophy behind site-sensitive architecture throughout Aspen and the Mountain West, including how projects like Elysium allow the land to lead the design.

Elevated Living—defined not just by altitude, but by experience.

In the mountains, elevation is not a singular condition. It is something felt, revealed, and lived—through movement, light, and connection to the landscape. At Z Group, this philosophy takes shape in homes that rise with their surroundings, rather than apart from them.

At both Shadow Mountain Residence and Strata House, elevation becomes a lived experience—expressed in different, yet deeply connected ways.

At Shadow Mountain, elevation is discovered through perspective. As the home unfolds upward, upper levels open onto terraces and expansive mountain views, where indoor and outdoor living blur into a single continuous experience. Light moves through each space as an ever-changing element, reframing the landscape from above and creating a sense of quiet lift—of being both grounded and suspended within the environment.

At Strata House, that same sense of elevation is embedded directly into the architecture. The home steps with the hillside across a 40-foot vertical rise, allowing each level to meet the land while maintaining a constant connection to the outdoors. As Seth Hmielowski reflects,
“We nestled the house into the hillside so that, pretty much on every level, you walk out onto grade. It works within the existing contours of the site rather than trying to force some other shape onto the house by cutting in a big flat spot.”

Together, these homes reveal a shared idea: elevation is not about height alone—it is about how architecture engages the land, frames the horizon, and shapes the experience of living within it.

Whether rising above the landscape or moving seamlessly through it, each project embodies a refined approach to mountain home design—where views are not simply captured, but continuously lived.

This season, we asked our team to share how they spend their time outside the office—and the response was everything we hoped for and more.❄️⛷️

From first tracks and après-ski gatherings 🍷
To ice skating, bonfires, and mountain hikes 🏔️
To travel adventures with friends and family ❤️

What stands out most isn’t just the lifestyle—it’s the connection.

One of our favorite things about these moments is seeing how often our team chooses to spend time together outside the workday. It speaks to something deeper than collaboration…

It’s a shared passion for the outdoors.
A culture built on relationships.
And a team that genuinely enjoys doing life together.

At Z Group, we believe the environments we design are shaped by the lives we live—and these moments reflect that.

Because great design doesn’t just come from what we create...
It comes from how we experience the world around us.

The heart of the home isn’t just where we gather—it’s where life unfolds in its most meaningful moments.

In the kitchen, morning light stretches across the island as the day begins.
In the dining room, conversations linger a little longer, layered with laughter and tradition.
In the living room, we come together—grounded by warmth, by texture, by presence.

And in the quieter spaces—
the bedroom, a place of rest and renewal,
the bathroom, a moment of stillness carved out of the everyday—
we find the rituals that restore us.

These are the spaces that hold us. Shape us. Stay with us.
At the center of every home is something you can’t always see—but you can always feel. A sense of care. Of comfort. Of love that lives in every detail.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the spaces that nurture—and the women who make them home.

Inspired by you. Designed for your story.

Your Journey. Your Story. Your Legacy.

Happy (almost) Birthday, Amy! 🎉

We’re kicking off the month by celebrating someone who brings creativity, warmth, and a thoughtful eye to everything she touches.

When she’s not designing beautiful interiors, you’ll likely find Amy out on the trails, taking in the mountain air, or spending time with her family—and her four-legged adventure buddy. While ski season may be behind us, we know the year ahead will be filled with plenty of fresh air, new adventures, and moments that matter most. 🐾

Here’s to another year of inspired design, scenic hikes, and great memories. We’re lucky to have you on the team—happy birthday, Amy! 🌿✨

The Midland Residences are entering a defining phase—where craftsmanship, coordination, and site-sensitive design come to life in real time.

As Basalt Center Circle continues to take shape, The Midland Residences are entering an exciting phase—where precision, protection, and craftsmanship define every detail.

Exterior progress is moving steadily forward, with brickwork now being laid, alongside the careful installation of flashing and soffit panels—critical elements that ensure long-term durability, weather protection, and code compliance. Every layer contributes to a building that is not only visually refined but also built to endure Colorado’s dynamic climate. At the ground level, site preparation is actively underway for upcoming concrete sidewalks, while underground rainwater storage tunnels are being thoughtfully integrated—an essential step in supporting long-term site performance and responsible water management.

At the same time, the interior is advancing in parallel. Recent site progress highlights electrical installations underway, bringing the framework of these residences to life and setting the stage for the next phase of interior finishes.

Our team was on-site just days ago, walking through the project in detail and reviewing progress firsthand. The latest images in this collection reflect that visit—capturing both the scale of progress and the finer details that define our approach. With every step, our team is taking great care and attention to ensure each element is executed with intention and precision.

In collaboration with Shaw Construction, this project reflects a shared commitment to quality, safety, and execution—ensuring that every detail is thoughtfully resolved for future tenants.

With a target completion set for this summer, the pace remains right on schedule. Each week reveals meaningful progress, and we’re proud to see this vision continue to take shape in the heart of Downtown Basalt. We’re excited by the momentum and inspired as this project comes to life—layer by layer, detail by detail.
