Great architecture isn’t defined by one dramatic gesture—it’s the thousands of thoughtful decisions that shape how a space feels.

Where Western Tradition Meets Contemporary Restraint

At Woody Creek Ranch, the familiar architectural language of The West is reimagined through a distinctly contemporary lens.

Low-slung forms stretch across the site, grounding the home within the landscape, while expansive windows create a constant connection between interior spaces and the land beyond. Wood, stone, and natural finishes add warmth and texture to clean architectural lines, balancing Western character with modern simplicity.

Inside, that same sense of restraint continues through quiet materials, considered proportions, and spaces intentionally shaped around the surrounding views. Rather than competing with its setting, the architecture draws its identity from it—resulting in a home that feels at once rooted, refined, and enduring.

Art and architecture share the power to shape how we experience a place—and strengthen our connection to the community around us.

Z Group Architecture & Interior Design was proud to support The Art Base’s 2026 10x10 Name Unseen in Basalt, celebrating the creativity and cultural community that make the Roaring Fork Valley such an inspiring place to live and design.

This year, that connection was personal. Architectural Designer Evan Weller and Director of Marketing Melissa Dunfee each contributed original artwork, with Melissa also volunteering behind the scenes.

For Z Group, investing in local arts and culture is an extension of our design philosophy: meaningful places are shaped by the people, stories, and creativity within them.

Designed for connection, independence, and a strong sense of place.

Sopris Lodge at Carbondale reimagines senior living through a thoughtful approach to architecture and interior design—one that supports daily life while keeping residents connected to the community and landscape around them.

Located just off Main Street in Carbondale Colorado, the community brings independent living, assisted living, and memory care together within a mountain-modern setting. Natural light, mountain views, welcoming shared spaces, and easy access to downtown and the Rio Grande Trail all contribute to an environment designed around wellness, choice, and connection.

For Z Group, the project was an opportunity to consider how design can do more than meet functional needs. It can encourage interaction, create a sense of belonging, and help people remain connected to the places and experiences that make the Roaring Fork Valley feel like home.

Sopris Lodge reflects a simple idea that thoughtful design can help people continue to live fully, comfortably, and as part of a larger community.

As summer comes to a close, we’re grateful for the energy, curiosity, and fresh perspectives our 2026 summer interns, Dajiel Robinson, attending University of Colorado Boulder and Jonathan Kelly, a student at Syracuse University, brought to Z Group.

Throughout the summer, Dajiel and Jonathan worked alongside our architecture and interior design teams on active projects, gaining hands-on experience while making meaningful contributions of their own. From design studies and renderings to architectural detailing, site visits, finish schedules, and permit documentation, they experienced firsthand how ideas evolve through collaboration.

For more than 70 years, Z Group’s legacy has been shaped by generations of architects and designers who believe knowledge grows stronger when it is shared. Mentorship gives us an opportunity to pass along what we’ve learned while making room for new ideas, questions, and ways of seeing.

As Jonathan reflected, “It was fun to create real work that was sent out to clients and actually had an impact on projects. It feels good to be able to help.”

Thank you, Dajiel and Jonathan, for your hard work and contributions this summer. We’re excited to see where your journeys in design take you next—and proud to play a small part in helping the next generation of designers learn, grow, and shape what comes next.

What a difference 18 months can make.

From February 2025 to August 2026, we returned to the same view of Basalt Center Circle's The Midland Residences to capture its progress month by month—and watching the entire journey unfold in a matter of seconds is pretty incredible.

What starts as an active construction site steadily becomes something more. The structure rises. Materials arrive. Details take shape. And frame by frame, a new place in the heart of downtown Basalt comes to life.

Of course, the real story is everything that happened between these moments.

While Z Group guided the architectural and interior design vision for The Midland Residences, a project like this is shaped by many hands. We’re incredibly grateful to the collaborators who brought their craft, experience, and local knowledge to the project:

What makes a home meaningful?

For us, it isn’t beauty alone. It’s how a home feels to live in—the way morning light moves through a room, how the landscape remains present from within, and how spaces create opportunities to gather, retreat, and simply be.

That philosophy shaped Ikigai, an Aspen residence inspired by the Japanese concept of finding purpose and meaning in everyday life.

Here, architecture and interiors were considered as one experience. Expansive glass draws the mountains into the home. Warm, tactile materials bring intimacy to contemporary forms. Spaces move naturally between indoors and out, creating moments of connection while preserving places for quiet and reflection.

The result is a home where beauty is not the destination, but part of something deeper: a sense of belonging.

We’re honored that Ikigai is featured in the Summer 2026 issue of Design KC Magazine, celebrating the collaboration, craftsmanship, and shared vision behind the project.

With more than 25 years of experience designing luxury residences, hospitality destinations, workplaces, and commercial environments around the world, Stephen brings a remarkable blend of creativity, leadership, and thoughtful design to our team. His award-winning work has been recognized by Architectural Record, Interior Design, Condé Nast Traveler, and Modern Luxury—but what inspires us most is his belief that great design begins with people and the stories they want their spaces to tell.
