⛈️Severe Weather & Your Landscape
Strong summer storms can do more than knock down a few branches. High winds and heavy rain can be especially tough on newly planted trees, shrubs, containers and saturated landscapes.
With severe weather moving through Northeast Ohio, here are a few ways to help protect your landscape:
1. Check newly planted trees — Make sure staking is secure, but not so tight that the tree can’t move naturally.
2. Move containers to a protected area — Large planters and hanging baskets can be damaged or overturned by strong winds.
3. Don’t try to “protect” plants during the storm — If severe weather has already arrived, stay inside. Plants can be replaced—you can’t.
4. Watch for drainage issues afterward — Standing water around plants can cause root problems, especially when soils are already saturated.
5. Inspect trees once the storm passes — Look for cracked limbs, hanging branches or newly leaning trees. Leave large or hazardous tree damage to a professional.
And remember: Some storm damage isn’t immediately obvious. Over the next several days, keep an eye out for leaning plants, broken branches and areas where water isn’t draining properly.
