The majority of goods carried by Gather are made by micro artisan / maker entrepreneurs meaning goods made by emerging business owners who hand-craft or manufacture their goods in small quantities. Gather’s owner Michelle is herself a maker entrepreneur who specializes in textiles, and home goods. Michelle’s goal is to elevate the work of these makers so that Gather’s customers appreciate the value of the product they are purchasing and the time and care that went into the making of each piece.

Father’s Day is in a few weeks. Here are some gift picks from the shop: a very fun bird hat (we just got a restock on your faves and a few new styles like these puffins), a paint by sticker book that makes for a relaxing evening hobby focused on cool buildings, locally made nut butter that he goes through each week, a card of course, lime jalapeño simple syrup to make tasty drinks that have a nice kick, a green glass drink mixer that looks great on a bar cart, a chili crisp recipe book (plus of course Asheville made chili crisp to go with), a cool unisex shirt, tinned fish for adding to his homemade pizzas, a super sexy brown highball glass, a new oven mitt that’s not crazy versed in cooking stains, a mid-century modern feeling journal for collecting stray thoughts, a puzzle featuring the covers of classic paperback books, and a NC-made hot honey for pizza, eggs, salads, so many things.

I gave a video interview today and one of the questions was “what advice do I give artists when pitching to a store?” And I said that a commonly overlooked piece is reciprocity. And what I mean by that is that acknowledging that a shop is also a small business themselves, and that supporting them is part of the ecosystem of creating a space where maker made goods are accepted and bought and consumed by others and that they too need the support and that they’re not just there to benefit you. I always think that that reciprocity component of learning about one another, learning about the products that really work in that store, is super helpful. And while I don’t have time to give extensive feedback to everyone that asks, I probably would if they did. It’s way more beneficial to ask for feedback first and start developing a relationship and learning what works for that particular store than just cold calling and sending them a pitch without that homework. Ultimately shop owners are curators and collectors and storytellers of objects but also they are business people and shelf space is expensive. I don’t have too much space to just test out if something’s gonna work or not although I do have some space for that. I’d rather take a chance on somebody that I knew aligned with my business across many facets versus somebody that’s just cold pitching a bunch of businesses without that relational aspect. One key tip is to obviously go into the store and frequent it if you’re local: you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours sort of concept, but also helping to maintain a healthy ecosystem that relies on many parts, but if you’re not local to go to their website and understand what their store and story is about. Really think about how your product and work fits into that and when you pitch your product (ideally via email) but a mailer works great as well, do it thoughtfully, so it aligns with their vision and yours. If you succeed in their store, then they succeed, and vice versa.

This past month has been a whirlwind of building out the space upstairs quickly, meeting and onboarding new coworkers, getting our house tidied up for a graduation party, picking early blueberries and tomatoes, hosting a class here and there, finally finishing and working out of the new space, chatting with others as they pop into the space themselves for the first time, hanging out with my illustrator friends (and proof that even they use old school iPads and not the fanciest equipment to do their work), and capping it off with a 4-day girls hang at a lake filled with kayaking, boat rides and leisure. 👌
