The kids are heading back to school, and we’re heading into a fall and winter filled with some pretty significant renovations.
And there’s something we want every client to understand before we begin:
Construction is not perfect. Things are going to go wrong.
Something will arrive damaged. A trade may install something incorrectly. Something may need to be removed and redone. And once we open walls, we may discover something no one could have anticipated.
That doesn’t mean the project is going badly. It means we’re in construction.
Five of the biggest challenges our clients experience:
1. Living with disruption.
Dust, noise, contractors, deliveries and spaces that are temporarily unusable. Your home will look worse before it looks better.
2. Accepting that mistakes happen.
Construction involves dozens of people and thousands of details. The expectation shouldn’t be that nothing goes wrong—it should be that when something does, it’s identified and corrected.
3. Dealing with the unexpected.
We can plan extensively, but we can’t see through walls. Existing conditions sometimes require us to adjust the plan, budget or schedule.
4. Navigating decisions and difficult conversations.
During a large renovation, we’re essentially married for the duration of the project. There will be hundreds of decisions and sometimes conversations about budget, timing or something you simply don’t want to hear. Honest communication and mutual respect matter.
5. Getting through the messy middle.
There will be moments when everything feels unfinished and the end seems very far away.
But here’s the important part:
Don’t judge a renovation by the middle.
A successful renovation isn’t one where everything goes perfectly. It’s one where problems are handled, details are corrected, everyone stays focused on the goal—and the finished home is everything we planned for it to be.
Construction is temporary. The end result is what we’re working toward. 💚
