Pretty is the outcome. This is the work that gets us there.

A renovation design doesn't stop at cabinetry, finishes and fixtures. We design for the build—which means construction drawings, coordination with the contractor, and understanding enough about how a home is put together to know what needs to be investigated before we start taking it apart.

In this kitchen, that meant looking closely at the existing range hood and venting before demolition began. We knew the new kitchen needed to vent properly to the exterior, and we wanted to understand as much as we could about the existing conditions before construction started.

From there, the conversation becomes collaborative: we've established the design intent and documented where we're going; the contractor brings the construction expertise to determine exactly how we get there within the realities of the house.

Because good renovation design isn't just knowing what will look beautiful when it's finished. It's understanding enough about how it needs to be built to ask the right questions before the walls come down.

You don’t always need walls to create a room.

In this older home, the front door opens directly into the living room, with no true entryway to mark the transition from outside to in. Rather than closing off the space or adding architecture that didn’t belong, we created that sense of arrival through thoughtful furniture placement.

A console establishes the boundary. A runner visually defines the path. A bench and coat rack give the family the practical pieces an entry needs—a place to land, take off shoes, hang a coat, set something down.

Together, those elements create a room that technically isn’t there.

It’s architecture without construction: using furniture, function and visual boundaries to change the way a home is experienced without changing its footprint.

I love that last thought for this project because it speaks to something bigger than “here’s how to solve a house without a foyer.” It demonstrates the kind of problem-solving you bring to older homes: not every limitation needs to be renovated away. Sometimes the more thoughtful answer is simply helping the existing house work harder.

As Dwell Well Design Co. continues to grow and the Dwell Well Design Collective comes to life, I’m looking for a Studio Operations Manager to work alongside me across both businesses.

This is for the person who gets genuine satisfaction from making things happen.

You’re warm with people. Exceptionally organized. Resourceful. A problem solver. You follow things all the way through—and eventually, you’re the person who notices what needs to happen before anyone has to ask.

You might come from project management, hospitality, client services, events, account management, operations—or somewhere I haven’t even thought of yet.
What matters most is how you work.

The role starts at approximately 25 hours/week, in person in Columbus, Ohio, with the intention of growing into a full-time role in early 2027.

A design solution that solved two problems at once: durability and personality.

This lower-level island needed to stand up to real life, but we didn’t want durability to mean sacrificing character. We wrapped the back in copper roofing sheeting—a hardworking, almost utilitarian material—and gave it a more tailored point of view with a custom brass nailhead pattern inspired by the plaid wallpaper elsewhere in the room.

That small connection matters. It lets two very different materials speak to one another and makes the copper feel intentional to the larger story of the space, rather than simply a practical solution.

And the copper will only get better with time. It can be allowed to patina naturally, collecting evidence of life as it goes, or polished back when a cleaner finish is wanted.

A practical material, treated unexpectedly. Durability became part of the design rather than something we had to design around.

A room that feels personal is never accidental.

Every piece is making a quiet argument for the whole. The rug that grounds the room. Texture that carries more of the conversation than color. A teak root coffee table that introduces something organic and imperfect into an otherwise refined space. A gallery wall that holds family memories alongside carefully chosen art. Botanical print pillows that give a quiet palette somewhere to land.

None of these pieces is trying to be the star. Instead, they work together to create a room that feels layered, grounded, and deeply personal.

That's the difference between a room that's simply furnished and one that feels collected over time. One tells you what the homeowner bought. The other tells you something about who they are.

That's always the goal.

Beautiful kitchens aren't defined by custom cabinetry alone. They're defined by what happens inside it.

Every drawer has a purpose. Every cabinet is designed around how our clients actually live. From where the coffee mugs go to the pots and pans used every evening, to the serving pieces that only come out when family gathers around the table.

The goal isn't simply to create more storage. It's to create a home where everything has a place, daily routines feel easier, and thoughtful design quietly supports the way you live. That's the part of design most people never see.

It's also one of the reasons a truly custom kitchen feels so different to live in. The beauty catches your eye on day one. The functionality continues to serve you every single day after that.

Beautiful homes aren't just designed to be admired. They're designed to be lived in.

One of the greatest privileges of this work is earning a client's trust.

Renovating a home means making hundreds of decisions. Many of them with long-term implications and investments that deserve careful thought. It's exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming.

Our role isn't simply to select beautiful finishes or create thoughtful layouts. It's to bring clarity to the process. To help clients understand not just what we're recommending, but why. To make decisions with intention so they can move forward with confidence instead of second-guessing every choice.

Hearing a homeowner describe that experience in their own words is one of the greatest compliments we can receive.

At the end of the day, beautiful homes matter. But helping our clients feel confident throughout the journey matters just as much.

And on a personal note, I'm incredibly grateful to Erin for being willing to share her experience so openly. It's a gift when clients invite others into their story, and it's one of the many reasons this work means so much to me. I'm lucky to work with some truly wonderful people.

You never fully know what a renovation holds until you're in it.

On paper, it's a smart, highly functional, beautiful kitchen. A cleanly detailed statement island. A mosaic tile installation that will quietly become the heart of the space. Thoughtful millwork. Drawer-in-drawer storage. Every element considered.

Behind the walls, it may be something else entirely.

Uneven flooring. Mechanical systems that don't align with the new plan. Structural surprises. Existing conditions that simply can't be uncovered until demolition begins. That's the nature of renovation work, and exactly why thoughtful planning and trusted partnerships matter.
