BIM QA/QC Lab | Tip #02

TLS vs. SLAM: The Point Cloud Accuracy Question

Not every point cloud is suitable for high-tolerance MEP coordination.

TLS

• Fixed scan positions
• Higher measurement accuracy
• Stronger control for detailed coordination

SLAM

• Faster mobile capture
• Excellent for rapid coverage
• Accuracy can vary with environment and trajectory

QC Check:

Before modeling, verify whether the point cloud accuracy matches the coordination tolerance required.

Fast capture is valuable. But the real question is:
Is the data accurate enough for the deliverable?

BIM adoption in the U.S. AEC industry has crossed 60% nationwide.

New data from the 2026 Construction Industry Outlook (published July 10, 2026) shows projects using BIM are finishing an average of 20% faster and 15% cheaper than those without it - and firms with certified BIM specialists are now winning the majority of Class-A bids.

Business impact: BIM maturity is becoming a factor in owner and GC risk assessment before price is even compared. Firms without certified BIM capability are being filtered out earlier in the selection process, regardless of their pricing or relationships.

eLogicTech’s take, after 25 years in this industry: this shift happened faster than most firms adjusted to. BIM used to be a production requirement you delivered after winning the job. It’s now becoming a pre-qualification factor. Firms that treat it purely as a back-end deliverable are already behind on how the next generation of Class-A work gets awarded.

Where is your firm on this - ahead of the shift, or catching up to it?

Most firms think overtime solves BIM delivery problems.
It doesn’t.

It usually creates:

📈 20–30% more modeling mistakes
📈 15–25% more coordination misses
📈 30–40% more QA/QC findings
📈 30-50% More rework cycles

Overtime may increase hours.
It rarely increases delivery certainty.

The real solution isn’t asking teams to work longer.

It’s preventing BIM teams from reaching overload in the first place.

⚡ Add capacity before quality starts slipping.

Project Context: Revit Detail Library Development | Dallas, TX | 40 hours

Client Challenge: Their detail library had years of conventions baked in. Most outsourced teams would’ve quietly rebuilt it their way.

eLogicTech Scope: Studied the existing library structure first. Built inside it - same naming, same symbol logic, same line weights - before touching a single detail.

Outcome: Final file dropped into ACC, used on active projects the same day.

Why It Matters: The firms that protect their documentation standards the hardest are usually the ones who got burned by a partner who didn’t.

Reply “Library” if your detail standards need a partner who won’t override them.

CD deadlines rarely fail overnight.

The warning signs usually appear weeks earlier:

📈 15–20% more revision cycles
📈 20–25% more coordination time
⚠ 30–40% less QA/QC review bandwidth
🚨 50% higher risk of delivery pressure and missed milestones

The problem isn’t that teams don’t see it.

The problem is they often don’t have enough capacity to stop it.

By the time leadership notices the deadline risk, the workflow has already been under pressure for weeks.

⚡ Add BIM capacity before coordination pressure becomes a delivery problem.

Design phase clash detection: $200
Construction phase rework: $2,400

Same error. Different phase. 12x the cost.

Not because the fix is harder. Because by the time it hits the field — crews are scheduled, materials are ordered, ceilings are closed, and everyone has a change order opinion.

The firms that never see that multiplier didn’t get lucky. They built a coordination process that catches clashes before a single bolt is tightened.

eLogicTech has been that process for AEC firms across North America for 25 years.

Infrastructure firms are about to win more work than they’ve seen in a decade.

🏗️ BIL-funded projects are entering peak delivery phase across DOTs, water authorities, and energy agencies — years of planning are finally hitting construction in 2026.

But here’s what doesn’t get said enough: this season won’t break firms because they lose bids. It’ll break them because they win too many, too fast.

We’ve seen this pattern before. A firm lands multiple infrastructure contracts in the same quarter. Leadership celebrates. Then production has to absorb it all - with the same team they had before the wins. Months later, schedules slip and QA gets rushed under the pressure.

The firms that come out strong on the other side of this wave won’t be the ones who won the most work. They’ll be the ones who had a plan to deliver it - without cracking under the volume.

That’s exactly where we come in: scalable BIM/CAD production support that flexes with the surge, without you carrying the overhead after it passes.

💬 What do you think breaks first when firms scale too fast - staffing, coordination, or QA? Tell us below.

📩 Got infrastructure work landing in the next 12 months? DM “Capacity” and let’s talk through it.

The field doesn’t care how fast the CD package was delivered.

They care whether:

✔ Details match the model
✔ Disciplines are coordinated
✔ Dimensions are accurate
✔ Installation can proceed without clarification

Because every missed QA/QC check becomes someone else’s problem. Usually on a much more expensive day.

Before your next CD issue, ask:

👉 Would the field team trust this package without a single phone call?

Clash detection always gets blamed.

But by the time Navisworks spits out a 300-clash report, the damage is already done. The real failure happened weeks earlier — in mismatched coordinates, undefined LOD, and MEP joining the project after every major decision was already locked in.

Clash detection isn’t your coordination plan. It’s just where the bill finally arrives.

We broke down the 5 upstream failure points that quietly wreck coordination before anyone opens Navisworks — and what a proactive workflow actually looks like.

Nobody budgets for the client call in Week 8.

Week 1 — 4 active projects. Team of 3 modelers. Manageable.
Week 3 — 5th project added. Same team. Getting tight.
Week 5 — Two deadlines land on the same Friday. One modeler out sick.
Week 6 — Permit set issued with coordination errors. GC flags 11 items.
Week 8 — Change order. Schedule impact. Client conversation nobody wanted.

The team didn’t fail. The structure did.

One production partner embedded 4 weeks earlier would have changed every number in that timeline.

eLogicTech is that partner. Multi-discipline BIM production — on demand, on deadline, on standard.
