Nothing on the list got finished. But the spray gun? Immaculate.

It’s not procrastination if it’s technically work. 🎯

Orange wood doesn’t have to stay orange.

But removing the orange is only the beginning.

On this project, the client’s vision calls for a cooler, more neutral finish. Before I start mixing stains, I need to understand what the wood is going to give me.

First, I bleach a sample to see how much of the orange undertone I can remove.

Then I apply a clear coat. Why? Because unfinished wood doesn’t always tell the whole story. I need to see whether the warmth returns under finish or whether the cooler tones remain.

Now I have a starting point.

From here, I can begin building a custom stain to match the client’s color sample.

Good color matching isn’t guessing. It’s understanding what you’re working with.

Stay curious. Follow along. I’ll show you.

The estimate doesn’t always survive the work.

Sometimes the project reveals something unexpected. Sometimes I simply get it wrong.

Either way, avoiding the conversation doesn’t fix it.

Make the call. Explain what changed. Own your part. Talk through the next move before moving forward.

Professionalism isn’t never having an uncomfortable conversation. It’s being willing to have one.

Building the Dream.

Before Kunicki Restoration became what it is today, it was an old space on Colfax Avenue in Denver, Colorado, nine months of late nights, and a pretty big bet on myself.

I had a vision for what that little workshop could become. I didn’t have all the answers. I just knew I had to give it a shot.

Since then, the business has grown, and I’ve moved into a much larger workshop in the very same building. Just two doors down from where it all began.

Looking back, I’m grateful for every long night, every uncertainty, and every lesson along the way.

What I didn’t know then was that opening those doors wasn’t the finish line.

It was just the beginning.

The story continues.

A professional finish doesn’t have to mean a complicated application.

Good surface preparation, the right finish and a blue shop towel. Here’s how I use the drizzle method with SutherlandWelles polymerized tung oil finishes.

Sutherland Welles offers a variety of finishes for different applications and purposes. Choose the finish for the life the piece will live—not just the easiest one to apply.

Credit where it belongs: Mary Goderwis, Mary Goderwis originally developed this drizzle application method. Thank you, Mary, for sharing your knowledge and making beautiful finishing more approachable.

The application is simple. The care behind the result still matters.

Save this for your next project. Follow along—I’ll show you what to do next.

Don’t be a knucklehead with oily rags: they can spontaneously catch fire. Follow the product’s safe handling and disposal instructions.

You can’t fit 26 years into one minute.

But you can share the lessons that still guide every decision at the bench: diagnose before touching, build from structure outward, choose materials with intention and know when to put the tools down.

I’ve spent 26 years learning what works—so I can show you what to do next.

I’m still learning. I hope I never stop.

Follow along. I’ll show you.

PERFECTION IS THE ENEMY.

The goal of touch-up isn’t always a perfect match.

On a layered, variegated finish, the professional goal is integration—building color until the repair no longer interrupts the whole piece.

Four colors. One controlled blend. The repair isn’t the first thing you see anymore.

You don’t need a spray booth or a shop full of expensive equipment to lay down a beautiful finish.

You need solid surface preparation, a few repeatable steps and the right products for the job.

I’ll show you what I use, why I use it and how I apply it—without shortcuts or unnecessary complications.

Follow along. You can do this too.
