“Can you make a key for a pinball machine?” Other locksmiths said no. We said bring it on. 🕹️🔑

Slide 1: a vintage cocktail-table pinball machine in a Denver basement. Glass top, chrome trim, playfield art straight out of the 1970s, and a little cam lock on the cabinet with no key in existence.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: small, weird locks are where most locksmiths tap out. Pinball cabinets, arcade machines, file cabinets, desk drawers, mailboxes, toolboxes, antique furniture. The key is obscure, the lock is tiny, and “sorry, can’t help” is the easy answer.

This is what a real locksmith company looks like. Save this post for the day you’re locked out. 🔑

Nine people. Seven uniforms. One van with our name on the side. Shops you can walk into. That’s not marketing, that’s the bare minimum you should expect from anyone you let near your front door, your car’s computer, or your safe.

Here’s the problem in Denver right now: search “locksmith near me” and half the results are trunk slammers. That’s the industry’s name for a guy with a key programmer in an unmarked car, no shop, no training, quoting $19 online and charging $300 once your door is open. Slide 3 is why three out of five keys stopped working. 😬🔑

A commercial property in the Denver metro called us back: staff keys were fine in two locks and dead in three, across the front and back entrances. Here’s what our tech found and fixed 👇

1️⃣ Two glass entrances, dark frames, pull handles (slides 1 and 2)
2️⃣ One cylinder with the plug forced clean out of its housing. That’s not wear, that’s damage (slide 3)
3️⃣ Every other cylinder checked, including a high-security one (slide 4)
4️⃣ Damaged cylinder replaced, front and back doors rekeyed to a single key (slides 5 and 6)
5️⃣ Every key cut, tested in every lock, and labeled before it left our hands (slide 7)

The tags matter more than people think. On a multi-door property, “which key is this” costs more time than the lock ever did. 🏷️

This door couldn’t close. Two hours later it’s good for the next few decades. 🚪⏱️

Here’s the thing about Colorado: the ground doesn’t sit still. Expansive clay, freeze-thaw cycles, slabs that tilt a little every year. A heavy glass storefront door on three small hinges can’t keep up. It starts dragging, then it won’t latch, then the keypad lock gets the blame for a problem it didn’t cause.

The fix is a continuous hinge, and here’s what that looks like 👇

1️⃣ Door shimmed to the right height, ladder up, drill out (slide 1)
2️⃣ One solid hinge installed along the entire edge of the door, top to bottom
3️⃣ Door swung open, latch and keypad lock tested until it closed clean (slide 2, you can see the hinge running the full height)

Why it works: a regular hinge holds the door at three stress points. A continuous hinge holds it everywhere. When the slab moves again, and it will, the door stays square. 🔩

The most expensive key you own is probably the smallest one on your ring. 🔋🔑

It’s the one for your e-bike battery. Lose it and the manufacturer quotes you weeks and a surprising amount of money, or tells you to buy a new pack. Here’s what happened when one of those bikes came into our shop instead 👇

1️⃣ Bike on its side, lock cylinder in the frame right behind the cranks (slide 1)
2️⃣ Our tech working the cylinder with picks and small hand tools (slide 2)
3️⃣ Fitting a key by hand, one small adjustment at a time (slide 3)
4️⃣ Testing it in the lock until it turned clean (slide 4)

No drilling. No new battery. No shipping anything anywhere. Just a locksmith on a stool with a toolbox and a lot of patience. 🧰

When a storefront door won't latch, the lock is usually innocent. 🚪🔧

Aluminum and glass commercial doors hang on pivots at the top and bottom, not hinges like your house. Pivots wear, the door drops a few millimeters, and suddenly the latch scrapes, the closer gives up halfway, and everyone blames the keypad lock. Swap the lock and the new one fails the same way.

Here's what fixing it properly looks like, in order 👇

1️⃣ Door off. Straight off the pivots and leaned against the wall to get at the bottom pivot hardware.
2️⃣ Up the ladder, drill in hand, refitting the top of the frame.
3️⃣ Door back on, wood shims underneath, aligned until the gap is even top to bottom.
4️⃣ Door swung open, keypad lock and lever checked, latch tested.
5️⃣ Tools packed, door closing clean. Slide 5 is the "we can go home now" shot.

Fix the alignment and the lock, the strike, and the closer all stop wearing out. That's cheaper than new hardware and it actually stays fixed. ✅

This brass handleset is on a glass storefront door. The cylinder came out, the plate came off, the hardware got serviced, and the whole thing happened on the sidewalk during business hours. Nobody flipped the sign to CLOSED.

That's the part people don't expect. When a shop door lock starts sticking, spinning, or refusing to catch, most owners assume they'll lose a morning or a whole handleset. Usually it's neither. The cylinder gets pulled, the plate gets serviced or rekeyed, and the door is back to normal before the coffee's cold. ☕
