The original pantry offered just four feet of usable space, and the kitchen no longer worked safely for a household with multiple cooks.

Opening the kitchen to the family room required a double LVL beam to support the second floor. Demolition also revealed a venting stack and water damage at all three door entries, requiring rebuilt joists and a new subfloor.

The solution was a new pantry on the opposite wall, with the former butler's pantry relocated beneath the staircase, turning overlooked space into storage that works for the way the homeowners live.

They wanted to keep cooking with gas. That one requirement decided the whole layout, because the island was the only place the cooktop could go. So that is where it went.

We also took out the pony wall barriers and the arched openings, so the kitchen, family room and breakfast area now read as one space instead of three. Heavy Tuscan out, clean modern in. On this project we used Crystal Cabinetry, Caesarstone, Sub-Zero and Wolf.

The luxury you can see is only half the story. Swipe to the end → Reimagined for aging in place: brighter and calmer, a Victoria + Albert volcanic-stone soaking tub, custom white oak cabinetry, accessibility built in. Every home has that one spot you'd never expect — here, it became a bar tucked right under the stairs. Sage-green cabinetry, glass-front uppers, a brass lattice backsplash, and a built-in beverage fridge turned a sliver of leftover space into everyone's favorite corner.
