Stop by the Grow Flagstaff Seed Library and pick up seeds for lettuce, spinach, and kale! While these are cool-season plants, growing best in temperatures between 50°F and 75°F, you can successfully grow greens in Flagstaff during the summer months. Try planting in an area with morning sun and partial shade in the afternoons, keep soil moist until germination, provide ample water as the plants grow, and if needed, a shade cloth. You can also take advantage of the natural shade provided by taller plants and plant salad greens in between and around them. Don't plant all of your seeds at once - sow some seeds every 10 to 14 days for a continuous supply.
Succession planting is a gardening technique that involves sowing the same crop every 7–14 days throughout the growing season. Rather than planting an entire packet of seeds at once, stagger your plantings to ensure a continuous, manageable harvest over time. It works great for salad greens, radishes and beans.

It's garden tour season in northern Arizona! Flagstaff has two garden tours each summer, with this year's events scheduled for July 18 (Viola's Flower Garden) and August 8 (Coconino Master Gardener Association). The Prescott Area Garden Tour is on June 27, with Sedona's tour of five gardens wrapping up the season on September 19. Garden tours are not only fun, but educational, and can help gardeners discover which plants thrive in their local climate.

Are you familiar with the Sleep, Creep, Leap concept in gardening? It applies to perennial plants that return year after year each spring.

Year 1 (Sleep): The plant grows very slowly above ground, focusing on root development. Some varieties will bloom sparingly or not at all during this stage. Give the plant a lot of TLC during this period.

Year 2 (Creep): The roots grow deeper and stronger. You will start to notice moderate above-ground growth, denser foliage, and in many plants, a modest display of flowers. Help the plant along in this process with regular watering and a quality fertilizer.

Year 3 (Leap): With a more developed root system, the plant is more robust, begins to spread and bloom!

Participants will tour the grounds, learn about the principles guiding The Arb’s newest demonstration garden, and explore practical approaches that can be applied in home gardens and shared community spaces throughout Flagstaff.
