OPN Seed

OPN Seed Your source for native seed and eco-friendly lawn alternatives. Creating habitat, supporting pollinators and beautifying landscapes since 1998.

OPN Seed (Ohio Prairie Nursery) has been delivering high quality native prairie and wetland seed to its customers since 1998. We offer individual species of native wildflowers and grasses and a wide variety of native seed mixes for different applications. As landscapes transition to more sustainable models, native species are an increasingly important component. Native species have adapted to envi

ronmental conditions over thousands of years and when properly selected can flourish and reproduce without any outside resource inputs like water, fertilizers or pesticides. The natural rainfall and soil nutrients are all that is necessary to support these durable and beneficial native species. This not only provides environmental benefits from a resource conservation standpoint but also an economic benefit through the removal of the associated input costs. The natural cycles on the earth begin with and depend on native vegetation. Plants form the first trophic level and are the only living organisms capable of converting sunlight into the usable energy on which that almost all other life forms depend. Native species feed the native herbivores, the most efficient of which are insects. Native insects pollinate flowers and supply the base food for numerous bird, reptile and amphibian species. The more we can help support the natural cycles through the reintroduction of native ecosystems, the better. OPN Seed operates an online store; we do not operate a walk in retail business. We accept all major credit cards, purchase orders with pre-approved credit, along with company and personal checks. We accept orders online, via mail, email or by phone. Orders are shipped via mail, UPS, or by truck. We can arrange for customer pickups of pre-ordered products by appointment only. We look forward to serving you.

Our Native Short Grass and Wildflower Seed Mix was designed as a native grass planting with wildflowers mixed in that have bloom times ranging from spring through fall once established. Typically reaches heights of 3-5 feet once established.

Why is this mix one of our most popular year after year?

🎨It's colorful! Look for green, yellow, purple, pink, orange and white blooms throughout the growing season.

☀ Have a partially shaded or sunny area? This mix needs at least 4-6 hours a day to establish.

🦋 Attracts birds, bees, butterflies and humans!

🌼Quantities available starting at 250 square feet. If you're new to native gardening or want to shrink your lawn this is a great place to begin.

Have questions about getting started? Don't hesitate to reach out. We want to help change the way you landscape.

Whew! April and Native Plant Month was one for the books! There are so many of you that are planting native this spring and we can't think of a better way to celebrate! But, here we come to play Debbie Downer just a little bit....

For those of you who installed seed mixes last fall, winter or early spring, patience is a virtue. Plants can be slow to wake up the first year and can take their sweet time growing! Look for annuals and faster establishing perennials to start sprouting up over the next few weeks.

Depending on your location, if you have a lot of vegetation growth on your plots right now, it may be volunteer growth from the seed bank. We caution you to NOT get into your plots right now and start pulling. You may do more harm than good and pull something that is supposed to be growing. Our advice: give your plots some more time and enjoy this lovely spring weather! There will be time for management, just not yet!

As always, feel free to reach out if you have questions. The above advice pertains mostly to smaller plots. If you have a larger area that you seeded, it may require some earlier management.
