The Kaufman Collaborative Architects

The Kaufman Collaborative Architects Space matters. We are committed to help ourclients find creative, workable solutions that are beautiful, cost effective and environmentally friendly.

My purpose and motivation is to design buildings and spaces to enhance the quality of life through unique, workable solutions that are beautiful, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. The Kaufman Collaborative is a Southern California architecture firm with over 25 years experience in commercial, institutional, and residential architecture. We believe in Environmentally Responsible Design,

combining passive solar planning and green sustainable technology with an acute sense of visual and artistic sensibility. We dream in color and challenge the assumption of conventional space, which means we look beyond the obvious for unique and tailored solutions. We've designed projects in diverse locations throughout California, Arizona and Texas. Each project is important to us, particularly the design process and serving the Owner. We've developed long-term relationships and have a stated objective to stay close to each project from beginning to end. For this reason we utilize a hands-on approach during construction to ensure that the Owner receives what was promised. We believe that good design does not have to be expensive, and above all want my clients to be confident in the process and satisfied with the outcome. We believe in a team approach to architecture and planning and that active participation between the Owner, Architect and Contractor will produce a better product. Our team consists of staff and professional associates who collaborate as necessary. Our consultants are knowledgeable of codes and have developed positive relationships with local boards and agencies. We are active in our community and have had the honor of serving as a guest juror and presenter several times at Cal Poly Pomona College of Architecture and Environmental Design. We remain current in the design field and have completed postgraduate courses at UC San Diego, UC Berkeley and Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

I’ve been experimenting with new ways to help clients visualize building concepts using AI. Recently, I uploaded a simple 2D sketch of my Fallbrook Pueblo project and added a few short prompts describing exterior materials, landscaping, and overall character. The AI produced a remarkably accurate image in under 45 seconds, and a short video based on that image in about a minute. For clients who have difficulty imagining designs in 3D, this level of clarity has been a game-changer.

The Kaufman Collaborative is designing another beach house, this time in Cardiff-by-the-Sea near San Diego. We will provide a 1,200 SF ADU above the existing residence and give the landscape a "brush and a haircut." The owner is a pilot who liked the curved metal roof elements used on the Carlsbad Beach House. This preliminary concept sketch depicts the frontage facing the ocean a quarter mile away. The upper floor will include a large, expansive, covered deck with exposed framing members extending from the interior of the great room. Clerestory windows will flood the interior with Northern light. Construction estimated 2nd quarter 2025.

The Kaufman Collaborative is pleased to announce that after two long years of awaiting permit approval from the County of San Diego, our project in Panoramic Estates (Vista, CA) will soon begin construction. This is an AI rendering of the project generated from a sketch I provided. Certain liberties were taken (e.g., curving clay tile roofing, the ocean), but other than that, it's close enough. The project rests on 4.2 acres and includes a 5,000 SF two-story principal residence and a 1,200 SF ADU over a four-car garage. The best part: the patient owners are ecstatic!

Recently I was asked to meet with 4th year students of my former intern (Brandon Ro, a Professor of Architecture at Utah Valley University) to discuss the practice of Architecture. I loved the high-energy of this group and their excitement for the profession. Our discussions ranged from using intuition and logic in design to the more practical aspects of being an Architect. The future is in great hands.

Often, a curved wall overlooking a 35-foot-tall atrium with views of the Pacific Ocean can add a calming spirit to an entrance to a home office.

ADU's (Accessory Dwelling Units),unique in California, come in all shapes and sizes, and fulfill different functions according to the needs of the user. Recently The Kaufman Collaborative was asked to design a two-story, two bedroom ADU for a couple in San Diego County, CA. Set in a heavily wooded area, the 1,200 sf structure includes a 23' tall atrium open to an upstairs bedroom/office with a 425 sf deck hovering over a carport and bike storage. The ADU features large wood trusses and a large skylight over the great room. Stone and horizontal siding was used liberally inside and out, topped with a metal roof. The folding door system at the front opens the great room to the front patio, where people can sit outdoors and view a large screen TV. The result is a restful place for gracious living.

The Kaufman Collaborative was asked to design the new corporate headquarters for a company to be located on the top floor of One America Plaza in downtown San Diego. The hi-rise was originally designed in 1991 by Helmut Jahn, and the existing shell space is dynamic yet challenging. We are looking forward to creating a very unique workspace.

The Kaufman Collaborative was recently privileged to visit our former intern's (Professor Brandon Ro) Architectural Design Studio at Utah Valley University (specializing in Classical Architecture). We spent a few minutes answering questions ranging from design and marketing to professional practice and were impressed with the high caliber of these students. Their 2-week assignment was to research the ruins of a Byzantine Basilica and, based on their research, reconstruct what they believe it may have looked like when it was built. They will present their drawings and 3D models in about two weeks. We will be honored to sit on the jury.
