The last post on moody rooms got a lot of response, so let’s go deeper.
Everyone’s chasing white walls and open plans right now and I understand why. But some of the most extraordinary rooms I have ever designed were moody, layered and rich with atmosphere.
The question I get most often is not whether to go darker. It is how to do it without the room feeling like it is closing in on you. Never skip layered lighting, adding something reflective to catch and move the light, using pattern within the same tonal family for texture, and always give the eye one pale element to land on.
