Window seat. Model planes. A 747. Then the pilot’s seat.

The newest episode of The World of Bill Stubbs is out now. It’s about Germany and about a boy who’s in love with airplanes. Where we went, what he noticed that I’d walked past for decades, and why traveling with a child changes how you look at everything.

My favorite projects are the ones I get from the floor plan to the final pillow, and this was one of them. This is the first room you see when you walk up, so I was planning it from day one.

Remember that colorful custom valance I was working on? Let’s take a look at it in my client’s kitchen.

Worth every stitch.

Ever been inside a drapery workroom? Come with me.

Most people only see the finished drapery. This is the part that makes it hang right.

Sometimes, the most extraordinary detail in a room is the one with a little history.

For this kitchen, I chose antique tile that brings character, warmth, and a beautiful sense of individuality to the space. There’s something wonderful about incorporating materials that have a story to tell. They add a richness and personality that simply can’t be replicated.

Who says a guest bathroom has to play it safe?

I wanted this guest en suite to feel cheerful and a little unexpected. The citron green walls do most of that work. The crisp white vanity keeps everything clean and practical, so the green never tips into too much.

My favorite detail is the mirror. It started as a plain white frame. I added ornamental bowls I found in Mexico, and it stopped being just a mirror.

Good design should have a sense of humor. This room has one.

Coffee, half a grapefruit, and ten minutes before anyone needs you.

This is the seat that gets used every single day, so it’s built for it.

We’re talking kitchens today, and look what I found to anchor this beautiful space!

Every great kitchen needs a little personality, something unexpected that catches your eye and brings the entire room together.

Same room. Same walls. Same windows. What changed is everything you put your hand on and everything the light touches. That’s usually all a transformation takes.

Come downstairs with me. This is the w**e cellar in a traditional home, and we slipped in a few contemporary pieces to keep it from feeling like a museum. Old house, new ideas, good w**e.
